Boom & Bust

Postby Mori » Sat Oct 25, 2008 3:47 am

I fell asleep on the couch and have woke up to the telly news in this early moning hour that the reccesion looms upon us all.

I remember my dad mentioning a reccesion during the 70s , shrugged my shoulders and said whisssat ?...
then we had another recession in the early 90s where i lost £100k's while trying to retain the family buisness which my father had built up over the years... Lost my parents house they left me and lots of debt, would the government listen would the banks help? noooooo efn waaaaayy.

They are only concerned about themselves, after all the interest you pay them they want their money, they are not concerend whether you live in a tent or a cardboard box, my nieghbour lost their house the other day through a repossesion after 18 years, a hard working couple, really disheartining for me to see in front of my eyes, they are moving in with freinds and family untill they can reset their lives.

British and scottish Governments Wake up and smell the shite you are shoveling good hard workinf families are being affected by the hundreds every day.

goin back to bed now that i have vented.

Regards to you all

I think the original Woolworth in Argyle Street had one upstairs.

It'd be sad to see Woolies go. Even though I never shop there :?

Crap Woolies family anectode of the week: when they first opened in Dundee (1920 or so?) my Grandad apparently went in to check out this new shopping phenomenon. At the time, they made much of the fact that nothing in their stores cost more than 6d - this was part of their advertising, I seem to remember. Anyway, in pops my Pop, who soon spots a big magnifying glass he'd really like to have. Price 1 shilling. Of course he queried this with one of the staff, who told him with a straight face that it was sixpence for the handle and sixpence for the lens.* Boom-boom.

* I can't vouch for the actual truth of this, not having been there, but so went the story... The magnifying glass did exist at least, I used to play with it as a kid at my Gran's.

I'll be very sad to see it go too, although there is talk of the brand name being retained over the entrance to 200 stores UK-wide. I'd hope the Argyle Street one would be one of those, even if it was Woolies in name only with a new owner.

I remember the days when the shops had wooden slatted floors and sold things like balloons on sticks for sixpence and pop-gun air rifles that fired a cork on a piece of string. Happy days and simple pleasures for we urchins of the time even if it was hot gravel for breakfast and 16 of us to a shoe box.
