Toilet facilities

Does anyone know of the legal requirement for the sanitary provision in a cafe?

Was in somewhere at the weekend with no toilet which was a bit odd (and left me short!)

A bit of googling turns up the "Local government (miscellaneous provision) act 1976 Sanitary conveniences for the general public In cafes and restaurants."

However, (a) that's legislation applicable south of the border, and (b) the act simply allows local authorities to enforce certain conditions, if they choose to do so.

As far as i am aware - if it has been refitted over the last 10 years and has been subject to a Building Warrant or Planning Legislation then it should have Toilets and if its been subject to any alterations / legislation via Planning and Building Control over the last 3 - 4 years then it should also make provision for Disabled people.

Older buildings cannot escape either, basically if a Cafe wants to renew its Environmental Health Inspection certification each year then it would need to have Toilets irrespective of how old it is.

Don't know if it applies to the 1/2 Cafe arrangments of Take Away with a couple of Tables and Chairs.

If you now have a toilet it has to be a disabled one, this might put off older establishments, either by space or cost.Perhaps we should start a glasgow toilet thread,I'm always bursting

I was close to pishy pants!

Just annoyed that I was paying my bill and asked if they had a toilet to use and got a "no we haven't"

Its an old place, don't know when it was last washed never mind refitted! Ended up going to Queen's Park Cafe (the pub) to use their toilets.

I second a toilets thread, a disgrace to have to pay for a pee!

p.s their home made soup was good, but their coffee pants!

There was something in the news recently about licensed premises being asked to/forced to open their doors to any punter who needs to pee, whether they're a paying customers in the establishment or not.

It's an easy way of cutting down on public toilets oft poorly maintained. They have this rule in Germany ... makes life pretty easy with all the beer they have over there ;)

I find places that have signs saying 'toilets are for customer use only' intently irritating. I mean, really, how much of a problem is it? It's right up there with people who have 'no turning' signs on their driveways.

That's an excellent idea. My late mother in law ( that sounds so good I'm going to say it again my late mother in law), who was full of pish, was an authority on ladies lavvies in the west of Scotland. Public bogs, shops and stores, woman friendly pubs, hotels, public buildings you could simply wander in and out of and so on.

As much as the toilets in Borders cause us staff endless problems, we HAVE to have them because of the cafe instore. Apparently the managers have tried to make Starbucks take responsibility but they're not having it!

20p to use new city centre toilets

CAUGHT short shoppers will have to fork out 20p to spend a penny in Glasgow city centre.
Glasgow City Council is to close four public toilets in a move which will save £600,000 a year.
The toilets at St Vincent Place, West Campbell Street, Cathedral Square and Stevenson Street will be replaced by modern 24-hour facilities.
Robert Booth, executive director of land and environmental services, says they are outdated, need significant investment and cost £860,000 a year to maintain.

She will be shut in a cubicle when they pour hundreds of tons of concrete in to shut them up.

she would have wanted it that way.
