"The Guide to Mysterious Glasgow" book

Postby Fortean » Sun May 11, 2008 9:32 pm

Evening all. A newbie here.

I have been commissioned to write "The Guide to Mysterious Glasgow". And I'd like your help.

Like others in the series what I have wrote - "The Guide to Mysterious Perthshire / Iona & Staffa / Loch Ness & the Inverness Area / Arran" - the book will provide a comprehensive, fully-referenced street-by-street or location-by-location guide to everything strange, peculiar, Gothic, grotesque, paranormal, weird, wonderful and marvellous in a particular place. The bibliography for the research is already several pages long

I've searched through the site and have viewed the postings on the various rumours of and experiences of hauntings, the Pollok witch tree, the Blythswood Square furry animals, and various strange experiences. But in terms of the remit of the book I'd like to broaden the topics to include:

Bleeding and weeping statues such as the 'bleeding angel' in the Gorbals.
Stigmatics, visionaries, prophets and seers.
Encounters with supernatural entities, from angels to the BVM to Great Cthluhu.
Ritual, magical and funerary objects and practices - everything from the the Blythswood Square toys in the tree to personal items such as charms, amulets, talismans, sayings, 'lucky' places and objects.
Fairies.
UFOs and IFOs (Identified Flying Objects).
Bizarre coincidences.
Strange deaths.
Really stupid criminals.
Spiritualism, séances, mediums and psychic encounters.
Hoaxes, fakes, imposters, myths, fictions and big fat madey-uppy stories.

I'm particularly interested in personal experiences or family traditions.

Can I ask that you include as much definite information as possible, such as when, where, what, who - date, location, address, other witnesses, weather (if relevant) and so on. And, of course, be aware that your post may end up in a book.

All contributions that I use will be acknowledged in the book. I'm happy to respect anonymity if required.

PS can anyone remember a short story in a 1980s newspaper (The Herald?) about the Tolbooth Steeple being a spaceship? Anyone know who wrote it?

About a year ago I surveyed the old Co-op funeral service gusset building on morrison street and that building is spooky.

There is a very strange masonry arch on the top floor with loads of hooks coming out the ceiling???

There were also many urns and other things associated with morgues.

Although, I have a feeling it now has some homeless people camping in it!

Would it hurt to say please and thank you?
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is generally adopted.

Years ago I can remember reading somewhere that Mansfield Street in Partick was 'the most haunted street in Glasgow'. I would love to know some more details about that as it's just down the road from me, even though one side of the street has long gone (and is now Mansfield Park).
