White Swan Pub, East End?

Postby sammycat » Wed Apr 23, 2008 3:48 pm

Does anyone know if there was a pub called "The White Swan" in the East End? It may not be there now, but I gather it was there around the late 1950s. If anyone remembers it, can you remember what street it was in/where it was or anything else about it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

There's a couple of White Houses here http://www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk/pubs%20w.html but no White Swan.

Any help?

Hi Onny
Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think it can be either of those "White Houses" as one of those pubs mentioned seems to have closed in the 1920s and the other is in Maryhill, which I don't think would be thought of as in the "east end". It is a good web site for looking for old pubs though!

Leading on from the above post what about the Bristol Bar on Duke Street. Apparently it was once called the White Horse.

Thanks for the suggestions Onny and papa lazarou
No way of knowing if it might be one of these.... that was the name I was given but perhaps the name has been remembered incorrectly.

Sammycat,
I've just had a quick word with the living encyclopedia on Glasgow pubs, or as we know him, Dad. He doesn't know of a 'White Swan' in the East End.

Was it definitely in Glasgow ? There's a White Swan pub in the East End of London, any chance your sources could have got the city wrong ?

Thanks for consulting "the orcacle" Eddy. I'm beginning to think that maybe the name has got a bit muddled over the years.

Good thought Mark N, but nah, the one thing that is definite is that it was in Glasgow!

Maybe I'll just have to leave this one for now and come back to it at a later date. Thanks to everyone who has helped so far.

"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.
