Lovely building, this one.

Anyone know the history of its occupation?

It was built in the early 1890s as the Mission to the Deaf and Dumb, hence the sculpture of Christ healing the dumb man.
The architect was Robert Duncan.

That's a beautiful building. I'm surprised I haven't noticed it before. Is it still in use?

Checked phone books to 1955- Mission for the Deaf doesn't appear, suggesting this neat little leaflet is post 1955. Will check more 8)

[aside]

My grandmother first had a phone installed in the thirties. Her number was {Area} nn, which became area nnnn, and then area nnnnnn. It's now 11 digits long. The number is still in use at the same address, although my grandmother departed (the address and world) a few years ago.

[question] when your granny's {Area} nn number became a {Area}nnnn number, did it become {Area}00nn or did it acquire an entirely different number altogether?

The original two digits remained (and remain) constant. The intial addtion was a '33'.

Ta. I wonder, for no particular reason, if exchanges up and down the country followed the same format or if there was a logical progression to it all.
