Victoria Park rock gardens

Postby e2wufos1 » Sun Jun 24, 2007 8:40 am

Glasgow City Council say on their website and I quote:

"The area near the Fossil Grove is one of the finest rock gardens in Europe. While many of the plants are not strictly of the rock garden variety, the area is hauntingly beautiful in summer."

Well I went down last Sunday to take some photos and this is the what it was like then it's almost like their not bothering with that area anymore.

It has also been heavily vandalised since they closed 'Fossil Grove' as there is little traffic in that area now.

Going by some of the threads on the Botanic Gardens Posts, no doubt some will believe that the Council is running this park down (Victoria) to make way for a new development!
"Listen, it's too big a world to be in competition with everyone. The only person who I have to be better than is myself. And in your case, that's enough."

Lovely park, grew up near there. I used to remember the 'big' goldfish they had in the ponds as a kid.

If they destroy the park and fossil grove (sounds like our mans posh house ::):) then its a travesty and the city fathers should be hung.

The Fossil Grove building is managed by Culture and Sport Glasgow and they closed it. The gardens are supervised by Land Services which is still part of Glasgow City Council. You can and should head to

http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/YourCounci ... uncillors/

Enter your post code and write to all of the councillors in your constituency.

Or on Friday pop into the Grapes and speak to them in real time.

Been using the park a lot more recently due to pushing new granddaughter round it in her pram.
The Fossil Grove and rock garden are a disgrace, granted, but the flower beds at the Fossil Grove entrance were outstanding during April and May as were the beds near the pond.

What amazes me is that a couple of the staff in the park told me that the Fossil Grove only opened last year due to sponsorship from a benefactor.
No sponsorship this year, so it remains closed.

One other gripe I have is that any gardening work being done seems to have to be accompanied by a vehicle, sometimes large. At times I've counted at least 6 land service vehicles cruising round the park. WTF is this all about? Are the staff too posh to push a barra now? Isn't a park a place to get away from traffic fumes?

Here's the same scene from 1997:

The Council is a farce to keep this area in such a state, and for shutting the fossil grove.

Shameful.

Thats the way I remember it from last time I was in the park Tim, my heart sank last week when I seen the state of the place.

It's Scandalous

If mine was a bit more to the left it would have made a great past present

I think most of this years budget for the parks went on flower planters all over the routes the Commonwealth Games inspectors were on.

Cheers, Scallop. I had a vague stab at trying to work out the logic behind the flower planter locations, but gave up. :)

That's shocking, but nothing is surprising anymore.
Something that should be discarded are those stupid mult level planters that crop up in various places. Put the cash into proper flower beds and landscaping.

I bet if I hid in your wardrobe and leapt out on you at 3am with a scream mask on and a chainsaw, you probably be pretty surprised. ::):
