I don't think you can wish for it to 17th Nov when the page is clearly dated Nov 8th 1747!

Sorry!!

I believe you you are having a go HH. I was trying to help, that`s all.

I could not decipher the written part which I assume named the year, It doesn`t look anything like 1747 written but I wonder,-- longshot -- does anyone know what the Roman numeral would be for that year ?

Is this a relative?

Not a relative (with a name like Smeal, I'm thankful - sounds like Golum's real name). It's part of a bundle of papers I've amassed re: Scotstoun.

Thanks for all your help, people.

This prcedes 'fourtie seven' it can therefore only be a wriiten version of SEVENTEEN - it doesn't look like that but it is all it can be, there is nothing else it can refer to in the context of the record of baptism by the minister. Its a straight forward chronological record of the birth and baptism.

Old Parish Records can through up dodgy looking writing [the record in question is exceptionally good], spare a thought that the minister might have been having a scotch or two on a cold November night.

Andrew Smeal in Scotstown & Janet Brown his spouse had their second Daughter born on the twentieth and second day of October [ja-vyt] fourtie seven years N. Alison & Baptised the First of [Nor](November) & year above Witnesses James Scott and John Young

"ja-vyt" from the image thats what the letters looke like most

but from context the word should be "joined" or something that fourty years refers to (In my example the length of marriage of the above couple)

for part 2 "Nor" with the superscript "r" is a shortening of the word NOvembeR

also our "ss" is spelt "f" and our "i" can often be replaced with a "v"

I studied Archaeology at Uni with an interest in Inscriptions on grave stones.

Hope this helps
