The Beeches Elderly Care Home

Postby RandomFactor » Tue Jun 12, 2007 2:09 am

I went for a wee walk earlier today and decided to get a closer look at the remains of The Beeches, a former old folks home o Langside Drive at Muirend roundabout that was gutted by fire a couple of years ago.

I've heard that there are plans afoot to either knock all of this down to build flats, or knock the back extension down to and tack a new extension of flats on instead, both of which sound like super ideas.

Anyone know anything else about it? I can't find anything with Google, and I'm pretty interested because it really is a beautiful building, and I'd be genuinely gutted to see it lost.

To see this demolished would be a travesty.

A few questions spring to mind:

1. Was the house completely gutted by the fire?
2. Was it derelict before the fire?
3. Could a member of the public purchase the building in its current state?
4. What kind of figure are we looking at to refurb the house?

Flats in Glasgow?

What a novel idea.

1. The main section (the original building rather than the extension on the back) was completely gutted, causing the roof to collapse.

2. It was in use as an elderly care home right up to the point it burned down

3. I'm not 100% sure, but I certainly can't see any reason why someone with enough money shouldn't be able to. I've seen building in worse states restored to become private homes once more.

4. Christ alone knows, from what I can make out the external sandstone walls all look sound, but as I said, it currently lacks a roof, and I would expect it lacks it's upper floor as well. Also, any restoration would need to take into account the demolition of the god-awful extension and repairs to the back walls where the extension meets them.

Apologies for bumping such an old thread, but on passing this building the other night, I noticed that scaffolding now surrounds it. I've not been able to find anything myself (google searches for "the beeches" and "83 Langside Drive" having been fruitless).

Anyone know what the score is?

There is nothing showing up yet on the Registers of Scotland website for a sale at that address. It can take 4-6 weeks sometimes for sales to be registered, so keep a look out on that website for the next few weeks.

Hi, some local residents received a letter from Baillie James McNally in September about the Beeches. Apparently he applied to the Council to carry out emergency repairs to the building and his application was accepted 8O

The extent of the work relates to making the building wind and water tight and will therefore include reroofing, stonework repairs, rainwater pipes and gutters, sash and case windows plus all rot works discovered. No work will be carried out to reinstate the interior of the building

There will be a "charge" placed on the building to ensure the recovery of the council's costs.
( got to wonder how likely this is)

I was fully prepared to see the building go to ruin. I did see people in the house before the council work started but they obviously had no plans to sort it out properly whatever they were doing.

Nobody seems to know who the architect was or who it was built for. The listed building report doesn't give any info (http://hsewsf.sedsh.gov.uk/hslive/hsstart?P_HBNUM=33933. It does say there was 'much good quality interior ornament, timber and stone carving, decorative plasterwork' which has probably been destroyed.

It's nice to see others interested in the building. if I receive any updates I'll post here

Went past it yesterday and they are clearly working on the roof.
I stopped and spoke to one of the workies who confirmed that they were just dealing with exterior repairs and he wasn't aware of any plans for the interior.
He advocated for the weak against the strong, the poor against the rich and labour against capital.

A wee walk?

A WEE WALK?

Yet you come up with this business.

Either you are a young man in his non-age or an old man in his dotage :P

Then again they were always good for a take-away from the Sun Hei at Fenwick Road :P

Many a good tip did they provide.

Thank you for all the info folks, I can confirm I have now heard much the same story from a couple of other sources.

I'm relieved that it's getting some manner of roof, as I feared that every winter that approached since the fire would be the buildings last!

I await a lottery win so that I can save this beauty!

When I last did the search for the sale, I didn't go back far enough.

The Beeches was sold 21st May 2009 for £599,000. The applicant was A Sarker. It had previously been sold in September 2004 for £1,225,000. The applicant then was G Street Properties Ltd.
