Hi Norrie

Gordon Barr has done loads of research into cinemas, and with an extensive collection of photographs his site is well worth a look!

Passed the cinema in Ashton Lane last night. There's just a big cavernous hole there now. Very sad

Hi guys, thanks for the information and photo of cinemas.
I have got both of them but dont let put you off finding others.
There are Glasgow cinemas that have no known photos of them so any help is appreciated.
Bye for now, Norrie

I have been in the Govanhill Picture House twice ! in the last 7 years. It is very local to me. I have tried to find out as much as possible about its architect Eric Sutherland. To my knowledge he also designed the Mayfair in Langside and The Korkie(A converted cork factory)as cinemas. He is also meant to have designed a bank on Govan Rd. The lack of info on him has made me reach the conclusion that he was really just a competant jobbing architect. I got a copy of the original plans from the Mitchell. Two earlier cinema proposals for the site were made in 1921 and 1925. I love the Govanhill Picture House and would buy it in an instant if i could afford it. It was on the market for £98,000 about ten years ago. Since then a number of businesses have came and went and it is now abandoned. Fortunately it is Grade B listed and appears from time to time in the Buildings at Risk register affording it the modicum of protection. ::):

Hey Johnny, I quite liked that cinema too, I like the Egyptianesque ones, got a nice little charm to them. The one on Rutherglen Main St's been spoiled since they gave it a coat of white emulsion. There used to be one in McNair St in Shettleston that was used as a Mecca Bingo for until the one in Easterhouse opened, soon after that it went ablaze. Does anyone have a pic of it, I've never came across one on the web?

By the way, you might be intersted to know Eric Sutherland also built the British Ropes Office in Rutherglen(1912) and Hillhead Savings Bank (1939).

Norrie, are there any pics of surviving (or status unknown) cinemas that you don't have? If not, post a wee list and we might be able to work a wee miracle for you... well... get you some pics at least 8O

Norrie's a frequent contributer to my cinema site - there's a list of places that may still have cinema buildings standing that have yet to be investigated for certain at:

http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~gbarr/cinemas/todolist.html

It's pieced together from lots of different sources and is by no means comprehensive. It also doesn't list anything we know as being demolished.

I think I have a pic of the Shettleston one you mentioned, I'll check and get back to you...

Gordon,

On yer list, the New Century in Motherwell is gone. I'm told it's now a Lidl.

Interestingly enough, I remember looking at newspaper articles from the time it was in the planning stages (About 1900, hence the name) and I believe there was some problems with paying for the building costs. If I get a chance I'll look it up for you if you want.
Too few hours in the day.
