*EDITS* not the accident just the anecdote.

one what hasnt been mention was 1989 at motherwell station on a warm sunday afternoon an intercity train came off the rails and almost demolished the station.

My late father was the leading railman and got the call to go out and assist with the crash

I just found out recently that my brother in law had to work on the carriage after the crash (he was a coach builder).

Uninteresting story I suppose.

This is a scan of a photo I have on loan from my dad. There is a family connection somewhere , but sadly forgotten with folk passing away.

It shows a Glasgow & South Western Railway crash site. No idea of the likely location ( any ideas?). Date must be late Victorian / early Edwardian ?



The original photo is about 3x5" , but it is worth looking at the huge size for a lot of detail I couldn't really make out in the original here

This thread brought back memories had a good friend die in the Paisley accident. If memory serves me right the crash happened just as the train left the station.

I know and did you see as well that the Asst manager who was off duty had his checklist in his top pocket.

Thanks Jim I never knew exactly what happened.
It was a Sunday and some people were coming back to Glasgow for work/uni - the beginning of the new week.

interesting enough the rear vehicle of that dmu 51017 survives to this day at bo'ness and has recently been restored

also our centre car was involved in the gower street accident and during restoration we found that the corridor side had been replated and had the asbestos removed by BR, pity they left the blue stuff everywhere else

Indeed, well found Govanman The picture at bottom right is the same incident from a different angle.

I sent a link to the picture to the Glasgow & South Western Railway Association and got a reply outlining the same tragedy recounted in your article.
