From my memory of the place in the 50's. It looks like either the church or the priests home? The last time I was there in 94 it looked derelict. In fact the whole area looked abandoned.

This building is what's left of Our Lady and St. Margaret's Church in Stanley St., the presbytery in fact. I'm surprised it hasn't been demolished already considering not only its condition but also its location, which is really just a dead end on the edge of the motorway surrounded by industrial buildings. There used to be a massive primary school right next to it, also called Our Lady and St. Margaret's, which was pulled down a few years ago. Both church and school originally served a densely populated area - now of course not a soul lives there anymore.

I'm almost certain Our Lady & St. Margaret's School has been demolished but I think there is another empty school building just across the road which may the one you are thinking of. I'll have a look at the weekend, if I remember. Whatever, it strikes me as a very out of the way place for a residential development.

It just shows how lucky we are on a daily basis. How dead would you be if you had been walking by when that came down? Answer at the bottom of the page.

very dead

There is an absolute sheister of VW mechanic that works down a lane near there. Petty it didnt squash his garage and it would save me hearing about another Vdubber ripped off by him.

Is this classic VWs like Beetles and those cool campers and 80s Golfs, or more recent stuff.

He can turn his hand to wrecking anything and ripping anybody off but he seems to concentrate on old beetles and campers.

I thought this building was now used by Social Work services - youth justice, adolescent mental health and such like?

According to Google Earth the building which used to be Our Lady & St. Margaret's school is still standing, although I suspect the image is al least 2/3 years old. It looks as if I may have got confused with another - equally large - school building which used to be on the corner of Scotland St. West and Middlesex St. and which was definitely demolished some time ago [think the jannie's house has been left standing]. If I get a chance I'll take a walk round there within the next few days and maybe take some pics.

The school is still there. I believe it had a rooftop playgroud, the building has been scaffolded at the M8 gable-end for a few years now.

Viceroy, the only other school I can think of in that area is Lambhill St secondary.

Here is the Google Earth image I was looking at. Within the rectangle on the right - if you can see it - is Our Lady & St. Margaret's. The rectangle on the left contains the site of the other school on the corner of Scotland St West & Middlesex St.

Scaryman, Lambhill St. Secondary is a bit further west [not in this picture]. It was converted into a nursing home about 10 years ago.

Thats quite an old pic as the scrap yard at the top of the pic has been gone about 4 years. Im pretty sure Our Lady & St. Margaret's suffered a serious fire a few years ago as well.

Side and rear view, showing the massive scale of this building, which actually dates from 1910, so it is not Victorian, although you wouldn't really think so looking at it from Stanley St.

At least part of the building is being utilised although I'm not sure what's in there now.
