8.6 Strathclyde and South West Scotland (Route 26)
Glasgow low level lines
Gap 18: Hyndland to Finnieston capacity and performance
The Hyndland to Finnieston corridor where all of the cross Glasgow services share the same two track section is one of the most heavily trafficked sections of the network with 18 trains per hour at peak times (14 trains per hour off peak).Given the flat junction at Hyndland East, it is operating close to full capacity for much of the day with services timetabled to operate close to the minimum theoretical headway.
Any delays to services can have a significant knock on effect.
Option 18.1: Remodel Hyndland East Junction
This option proposes the remodelling of Hyndland East Junction to extend the four track section further east. This would provide some limited additional capacity.
Option 18.2: Remodel Hyndland East junction and rebuild Hyndland station
This option proposes the remodelling of Hyndland East Junction, concurrently with the
renewal of the junction in 2010, to extend the four track section from Hyndland East Junction to the east of Hyndland station using existing railway owned land. It would be necessary to rebuild Hyndland station as a four platform station, which would allow improved access to the adjacent Gartnavel hospital. As trains calling at Hyndland station would be on the four track section, junction occupation would be reduced and capacity increased.
Option 18.3: Operate longer trains
Platform capacity on the Glasgow North Electrics and Argyle lines permits the operation of six car trains. At present only approximately 20 per cent of peak hour trains operate as six vehicles, the remaining consisting of only three vehicles. It would be possible to reduce the number of trains operating and retain the existing capacity by operating a reduced number of trains with a higher proportion of six coaches. This would
retain the current capacity level with a reduced number of services. The high number of
origins, destinations and intermediate stations to be served means that this option would
result in an infrequent service on some parts of the network even in the peak period.
Option 18.4: Recast timetable
At present all services on this corridor call at Partick and Hyndland. This option proposes
that trains call alternately at Partick or Hyndland which would reduce the time that trains
occupy the congested section by approx 1.5 minutes. Hyndland and Partick are, however, stations with a very high level of usage, both by passengers starting and ending their journeys and by passengers interchanging. As such this option would reduce interchange and journey opportunities significantly.
Proposal
It is proposed that the following option be considered further as part of the Strategy:
Option 18.2: Remodel Hyndland East Junction and rebuild Hyndland station
