According to Historic Scotland, it was originally a hotel, then business and commercial premises:

There was an RAF recruitment office there in the late fifties.

John Boyle (Zoom) had a travel agents in the lane before it was P SQ. I was going out with one of his staff who worked there.

I was just thinking of Bows blackhack, remember getting a wall-walker out of there that was hopeless on wallpaper

Just about every Saturday I'd get dragged into town by my mum to meet dad from work then doing Sauchiehall St, Buchanan St and Argyle St taking in the usual department stores.

I remember Telfers in Mitchell Street as well but only very vaguely. Used to love the old wooden escalator in Lewis's though and have to agree with what's been said about the toy department - it rocked!

I remember when I was about 8 going into Goldbergs to get a scotrail super sprinter for my train set, I had saved up for ages and finally got the Strathclyde Transport Orange one, I was so excited. I remember that they did use codes for the prices, they typed the code into a massive free standing IBM till point that looked like a pub quiz machine. One of these till machines were still there a few years ago. Maybe worth a forturne now to a collector. Ive still got that little sprinter up my loft.

I remember in the late fifties early sixties ,when camping holidays was the in thing, Lewis's had one of there floors all set up like a campsite, all the tents were pitched on the floor and they had dummy camp fires with folding chairs and such all round them ,all the different pots and pans were set on the fires, the tents had campbeds in them.My friends and i used to dog the school and spend the whole day in the store .It was like a holiday for us ,a real adventure. :)

Memories, but I wish some of these stores would return - even if it is a time of 'rose tinted glasses' but I simply enjoyed Arnotts, Lewis's and C & A amongst just some mentioned. Anybody feel the same way?
