gutties are any form of trainered footwear I think you'll find.

Well, it used to just refer to the canvas things you had to wear to gym at school when I were a lad, but perhaps the word has acquired additional meanings in the interim period .

Probably gets its name from gutta-percha, which is a type of rubber. See here.

anyone remember marks duman tailors in saltmarket?

Once I was "on my own can" I got a suit made there, also from John Stewart at Brigton Cross. Real tailors.
As a fashion victim in the early 70s I got my made to measure shirts from Arthur Blacks and my Ben Sherman's from Mr. Jon's in Argyll St. I got some stuff from Ger-alds (Sta prest in the 60s) at the corner of Dundas Street. The Army Navy Stores (just south of the river) for Wrangler Jeans. I wanted to get a Crombie at Paddie's Market, but my maw swore she would burn it. I still hold it against her 40 years on.
No one's mentioned McMurtries on the Trongate.
I got school clothes from Paisleys in Jamaica St.

Same here, it was quite an event buying clothes back then. She also bought stuff from Paddy's market and the barras.

I was lucky when I was wee there was just me and my granny and not a big family to clothe so she would get the provy cheque and we would go into town to Lewis's for a summery two piece suit consisting of flowery dress and toning coat with a straw hat and clark's sandals to be worn on a Sunday. C&A for the rest of the week.
As a teenager one went for the hippie slant fur coat from Paddy's, tops from ethnic shops on GT Western Road (one of them still there, next to Domino's) and a blue afghan coat that I bought in Argyle Street up from C&A's where all the leather shops used to be. I loved that coat even when it got wet and a couple of dogs would follow you up the road!

Some memorable names there G-Man, One stands out for me is the sport shop Lumleys. Does anybody have a location for this shop because for the life of me i cant put my finger on exactly where it was.... Cheers

Cheers Banjo, Did'nt know about the Byres rd outlet but im sure that thier city centre outlet was a competitor of Greaves sports on Gordon st. But again as the years roll on memories fade slightly. :)...
