As for the Flag, probably something to do with the Fleet Air Arm housed here at the time perhaps?

Going back a page, someone mentioned that something "plane shaped" can be seen on Google Earth near the school. I've been searching high and low but can't find anything of the sort! Anyone guide me in the right direction?

Here's my version of the image... a few of the worst scratches removed, and some colour tweaking to get it looking a bit better.

Sadly there's only so much that can be done, although some light sharpening has tidied the lines up a bit...

I've tried to minimise the edge darkening, however I decided to leave the old edges in so that it still looks "period" :-)

Renfrew Airport

I have recently been scanning many of my old negatives and have come across this photo which I am fairly certain was taken at Renfrew back in the early 60s. I'm not sure if the BEA aircraft I was on was arriving or departing but there seems to be quite a crowd bottom right in front of the building :o

Sorry the quality is not that good but perhaps someone would like to try the magic wand trick on it!

Hi guys

just found this site a few weeks ago and this is my first post !!

This thread about Renfrew Airport caught my eye as I've always been curious as to why it disappeared and Glasgow Airport came to being however ...

Google Earth ...

co-ords 55 52 11.37 N, 4 23 00.48 W

ssems to show a "tiled" exposed area under what is now part og KGV playing fields ... part of airport parking apron maybe ?

Quite a few patches exposed if you hunt around ....

p.s.how do you post an image ?!

Aye it is Andy, have a wee look at page 4 of this thread  We've already done that bit with Google Earth and the position of the runway has been overmarked.

I've got some photo's i took when i was up at Arkleston a couple of weeks ago, i'll post them once i find them.

Overlay of 1960s map on Google photo

I grew up in the early 60's aircraft-spotting at Renfrew on Friday evenings as a 12 year-old. After reading this fascinating thread. I tried to plot the airport layout on Google, using the photos and an airport diagram from an early 60's British airports book. It worked out not too badly, but the ramp ended up having too much area, so I knew something was off quite a bit.

Then recently I got a copy of a Geographica map of Glasgow from about 1960 from my Father, and overlaid it on Google. To my utter surprise, after aligning points such as the Arkleston cemetery, intersection of Glasgow Road and Glebe Street, and Paisley Road, the runway does indeed seem to be just to the north of the M8.Image Although not perfectly aligned and the streets are over-wide on the map, it all fits rather nicely.

My sincere thanks to you all for so much information - I look back on those years with much fondness, and it was the start of my life-long romance with aviation. Any other photos will be much appreciated.

Greetings from the west coast of Canada.
