Leaning tower of Glasgow

I've often read that the Cameron Fountain at Charing Cross is leaning due to the nearby motorway underpass, but look at this pic 8O

The real damage was losing all those buildings :(

What makes the loss of the Charing Cross Grand Hotel all the more galling are the aesthetics of the replacement building. Brutalist architecture is the bane of the City’s existence.

The following is the blurb from TheGlasgowStory:

Sculptor George Tinworth created the Cameron Memorial Fountain in 1896 in honour of Sir Charles Cameron, the newspaper owner-editor and Liberal politician. The original clock shown here was replaced in 1908. Like Charing Cross Mansions, the fountain has survived (although listing to one side) into the 21st century.

Hmmmm... I always thought the story went that the fountain was moved when they demolished the Hotel. Doesn't seem to be the case going by the above pic!

Could it be the underground public toilets? I can't actually see them in that picture, but they are squarely behind the tower

About it being moved... its current position seems to sorrspond with the alignment shown in the above pic?

Hi all, I live right by this leaning tower and noticed last night that it has had yellow and black tape and traffic cones put around it. I'm worried its going to get demolished! Does anyone have any idea what section of the council would deal with this? I'm going to do some investigation today and try to find out what their plans are...

Best

It may not be because of the "lean", it may be because of crumbling masonry and it poses a hazard if someone sticks their head inside it.....maybe....

Either way I doubt it can be demolished or destroyed as I'm willing to bet it is a listed structure probably. It could be dismantled piece by piece and either repaired properly, and/or re-erected somewhere else.

As an aside I read somewhere that it was purely an urban myth that the lean was caused by the excavation when they dug the big trench through Charing X to build the motorway, in that it actually had started to lean years/decades before....not sure if there is any truth in this or not??

According to this site, http://www.pmsa.org.uk/pmsa-database/2398/ the tilt was first noted in 1926 - the Mitchell may have a copy of the newspaper mention or indeed it maybe documented in Council minutes again the Mitchell should have a copy

I wouldn't want to attempt to date this photograph, but it's clearly long before the demolition of the Grand, and the fountain certainly looks like it has its distinctive lean back then.

This one, from the early 1960s and taken looking up North St., shows that it was leaning before the motorway.

St George's Cross, pre-M8. Use the zoom buttons on the top left to take a virtual walk around a whole lost swathe of Glasgow...
