Glasgow QSt 0706 - inverness 1029
Inverness 1843 - Glasgow QSt 2219 (Change at perth)
All for £16 return next Monday (tickets currently available according to online booking thing).

Or if you are just in it for the train ride, one I did 3 years ago now

Glasgow QSt 0706 - Inverness 1029; Inverness 1101 - Kyle of Lochalash 1326
Kyle of Lochalsh 1715 - Inverness 1949; Inverness 2015-Glasgow QSt 2339
again do-able for £16 return - amazing scenery viewable on highland main line going north and both directions on the Kyle line. Also try getting people to believe ypu had almost 4hrs in Kyle on a day out from Glasgow.

Glasgow QSt 0821 - Mallaig 1335
Mallaig 1605 - Glasgow QSt 2130
Again £16 - the West Highland line is voted one of the most scenic in the world. But 10hrs on a train may not be for you.

Today (Saturday 30th Oct 2010) at approximately 15.25 I saw a steam locomotive traveling at full tilt along the West Coast line at Bowling Harbour. It was pulling (I think) 4 carriages. It was a truly magnificent sight. This would have been about the 4th time I have seen it at the same spot. Can any of you railway experts out there tell me anything about this train?

The Jacobite ran yesterday on the West Highland line, might have been the train set involved in that returning to wherever it's based.

Info on mainline steam services running in the UK can be found here - shame to see the Caledonian Tornado due in Glasgow next week has been cancelled:

rarest blue train photos ever

Postby darrel » Sun Nov 07, 2010 4:48 am

something really special these photos were originally from British
rail and were destined for the bin till they were rescued not by me. Both of these
have never before been made public
first one is an artists impression of the blue trains
http://darrel817.fotopic.net/p68004811.html
back in the late 50s a wooden mock up of the blue train was made as far as I am
aware the mock up was never put on public display. members of the BR design panel
came up from London to view it I believe the photo was taken at Linwood at pressed
steels factory
you will see the mock up differed from the final version in that it didn't have
an jumper cables or brake pipes on the front end. there is an additional cab window
and the drivers door was behind the eventual position and swung inwards i am not
sure if the cab was bigger or if there was a gangway behind the cab like a class 305
and 308.
the second passenger window behind the driving cab is also smaller
also of interest is the destination in the destination screen. somewhat ironic
considering where the only complete class 303 is now preserved. this is the only
photo i have ever seen of the mock up
http://darrel817.fotopic.net/p68004810.html

it does not get any more rare than this. special thanks to the two Bobs
to mark the 50th anniversary of the Glasgow Electrics there is a exhibition in the
Kelvingrove museum starting 5 november 2010 covering the start of the blue trains right up to
the A2B project lots of rare memorabilia and photos the exhibition runs till
February.

Excellent pcis, Darell !

I left Glasgow for Australia just after the Blue Trains started running, at the end of 1960, and I thought they were the Bees Knees !

Spotted on Facebook.

"Scotrail trains travelled on today 4. Trains on time 0. Trains with working toilets 0. Trains with overpowering stench of vomit 2 (must try harder). Trains with faint smell of vomit 1. Scotrail run stations with locked toilets and no key available 1. Value for money as a Scotrail customer 0."
I hear the people sing.
