Fighter Jet over City Centre

Postby Rossco » Wed Aug 10, 2005 10:44 am

Hi Folks

Not sure this is the right place for this... but my office is on Sauchiehall Street around the corner from the GFT and a fighter jet has just flown over us at a pretty low altitude... er... should I be worried?

I heard it, but didn't see it.

It does make you a bit jumpy given the current climate.

Might it be to do with the constant wailing of bagpipes in George Square, to do with the World Pipe Band Championships.

A flyover or something?

Aye, it flew over my house in partick. Spare a thought for the folk that live in the highlands that get this stuff all the time.

...and Dumfries & Galloway.

It used to do my head in... although the aerobatics could sometimes be fun to watch!

Someone from Cumbernauld was saying that they just had a couple of jets doing a close flyover too.

EDIT: If anyone's interested there's a page on their low flying policy here: http://www.mod.uk/issues/lowflying/community.htm

Tornado passed over me in Shettleston around 11:30, very slow and only around 200 ft.

Most unusual when you hear the engine at first and expect it to die away like the usual Glasgow airport straggler.

Not comparable with Highlands or D&G where they are doing nap the earth training and flight at 400 knots.

AFAIK, they have to stick to strick low-fly zones and height limits and times. When training that is. And they aren't supposed to fly over built up areas for fairly obvious reasons. Which is why this has raised questions as to what was going on!!

This from the MOD website

Areas into which low level military aircraft are not permitted to fly are known as avoidances. They are approved at Ministry of Defence Head Office for one of two reasons: flight safety or disturbance. The avoidance areas surrounding major airports and busy airfields, helicopter landing sites, and glider and microlight sites all fall into the former category. Major built-up areas (generally those with over 10,000 inhabitants), certain hospitals, and some important conservation sites fall into the latter. A number of industrial sites where potentially hazardous activity takes place are also granted avoidance areas.

Strange...

I have seen Tornado flights over Glasgow before, but the last I can think of was for the flyover for the Queen's Golden Jubilee vist. Three jets coming low over George Square and heading up Duke Street was something you dont see evey day

Might have some more info about yeterday's flight later.
