OK, so its in Edinburgh, not Glasgow - but here's an opportunity to make a difference....

Plans have just been lodged with Edinburgh City Council for a scheme that involves the demolition of the B-listed New Victoria / Odeon cinema.

The plans can be viewed online here in detail:
http://citydev-portal.edinburgh.gov.uk/ ... /00327/LBC

In summary though, only the facade is to be retained, and that is to be extended by an extra glass floor above current roof level. The auditorium is to be totally swept away.

For a history of the New Victoria, and for photos showing what could very well be lost, see these links:

http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~gbarr/cinema ... index.html

http://members.tripod.com/odeon_edinburgh/frameset.htm

The building was listed by Historic Scotland in 1974; as a result the internal subdivisions to form 5 screens within the original auditorium were done reasonably sensitively - and, most importantly, reversibly. Pretty much all of the original decoration you can see in the archive photos in the links above is intact, if currently hidden behind modern additions.

The official description of the building in its listing entry calls it "An outstanding example of the work of the most famous British cinema specialists." - it was one of only two cinemas designed by WE Trent north of the border.

Listing details from Historic Scotland:
http://hsewsf.sedsh.gov.uk/hslive/porta ... BNUM=30028

What you can do:

The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997 states, in part:
"…a planning authority […] shall have special regard to the desirability of preserving the building or its setting or any features of special architectural or historic interest which it possesses."
where
"… "preserving", in relation to a building, means preserving it either in its existing state or subject only to such alterations or extensions as can be carried out without serious detriment to its character, and "development" includes redevelopment."

If you feel the proposals outlined above do not meet these legal requirements then you can comment on the proposals (before the 11th of March) online here:
http://citydev-portal.edinburgh.gov.uk/ ... 0327%2FLBC

Note that you must give your full name and address for the comment to be officially registered. You can also write to the planning department at (quoting planning application reference 05/00327/LBC):

Oh, and the following letter about this demolition threat was also published in the Edinburgh Evening News last week:

After submitting a 1-line comment to the proposal via the website, got the following through the post today:

Demolition of cinema to form 240 bed student residence with bar/restaurant (class 3) retaining existing Clerk St facade at 7 Clerk Street.

Acknowledgement of representation

I am writing to confirm receipt of your representation with regard to the above noted application, on 21 February.

The representation raised in your letter (sic) has been examined and is considered material to the determination of this application.

Your views will be taken into consideration, blah blah blah

I'm summarising a bit, but you get the idea. Apparently they'll inform me of the decision they end up taking.

Good news at last...

Very happy to be able to report that the planning application to demolish the New Victoria / Odeon Clerk St in Edinburgh has been withdrawn by the developers, after Historic Scotland and Edinburgh City Council made very clear that demolition of the auditorium would not be supported.

Details on the planning website here:
http://citydev-portal.edinburgh.gov.uk/ ... /00327/FUL

Details on the New Victoria / Odeon here:
http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~gbarr/cinema ... index.html

Of course this doesn't help secure the long-term future of the building; but at least it means there will be a building!

Is the building still currently being used or is it lying vacant?

Indeed it is, however there is still a chance to see it this year, as it is once more being put to use as a temporary Fringe venue at the Edinburgh Festival. The company who ran it as such last year went belly up, this year it's being run by "C", and will go by the name C Electric. Their website is at:

http://www.cthefestival.com

Incidentally, I've many pics of the interior taken earlier this year, place looks kinda sad and unloved inside without seats! - shots of Screen 1 can be found here:

http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~gbarr/cinema ... dates.html

http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/~gbarr/cinema ... pdates.htm

Whilst some shots of elsewhere can be found in the now and then comparisons at the bottom of this page:

The very nice people at C Electric - as the ex-Odeon Clerk Street is called for the duration of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - are showing a selection of classic films all day, every day for the whole of August.

This could be your last chance to see films properly projected in 35mm in the stunning atmospheric surroundings of Screen 1 (pictured above) - so make the most of it!

This used to be my local cinema and I loved it. It's the inside that's exceptional (why do they think it's ok as long as they leave a hint of the exterior?) I don't know why they closed it down as it's in the heart of the student area and there were usually big queues outside.

Good news anyway! I heard rumours about it turning into a nightclub of the Revolution Lothian Road variety 8O

Heh. Don't get me started...

Well it wasn't because it was losing money, as Odeon claimed at the time (bit of a lie there!) - they wanted to make a quick buck by selling the building and the land basically from what we've been able to tell.

Sadly this is just temporary re-opening of course, so make the most of it!
The long-term future for the building is sadly still far from secure...

Wow it looks like you've got just about every old cinema building in the country covered!

Not Glasgow but, this my fave cinema, it's in Berlin and sadly closed down in March. Again, it was still v popular: the cinema was always packed as it was the only pre-war cinema still intact and with its original organ still functioning. I saw Der Golem with live organ music.

I'm not really sure what's going to happen to it now. This is their website but my German isn't great. http://www.fkh-babylon.de/
