Yes I remember it. It was quite a big shop as I remember it (or maybe just 'cos I was small!). My brother and I used to drool over model railways in there.... Hornby, Lima & all those old makes.

I remember it also. My dad bought me a train set in there - the guy
behind the desk took it out of the box and ran it on a test track to
make sure it was working. This counter was right in at the back of the
shop IIRC. The only disappointing thing was they only had the set
I got in BR Green loco colours, with Carmine and Cream coaches - I
wanted BR Blue Grey, like the one that was in the window. :?

I also remember this, but only the first two sites mentioned. It always had the feel of a magic toyshop that couldn't exist in the open air, so I'm surprised to think of it being as exposed as the Tower Records site. Don't think I was ever bought anything from it, though.

Argyle Model Dockyard

Postby Pgcc93 » Fri Feb 20, 2004 10:46 pm

I remember it being right under the 'Umbrella'. It had a modern brick like facade above the shop bearing the 'Argyle Model Dockyard' in illuminated yellow lettering. Well at least in the early 1980's.

It wasn't a place for kids to spend their pocket money though as the stuff
they sold was all a bit highbrow for kids.

An old Uncle, who was into his railway stuff spent a small fortune over the years.
One of the last major Items he bought, If I remember was a 1/12 scale working model of Stephenson's Rocket built by Meccano of England.
And to put a not too fine point of it at the time (I was about 10) It was shite!. 8O

IIRC it was latterly one of those 'Land-O-Leather' shops before the whole area got a makeover about five years ago with all the green frontage to the shops etc.

I remember well The Clyde Model Dockyard being in the Argyll Arcade from the 50's. Does anyone remember the other model shops (my interest was aircraft) at Pitt St and another one in the Cowcaddens there was also a good one on Renfield St but I think it closed in the early 50's. Those were the days!

ach, aye, it's a crying shame all the model shops have gone. Beatties was really the last outpost and even that's disappeared from st. enoch's square now.

Come to think of it I can't really think of a decent model shop in the centre now...

Any recommendations?

Vague memories of one in Parnie Street, right behind the Tron, and was there not also one across from The Bed Shed in the Merchant City, in Bell Street? This would have been about 8 years ago, either of them still there?

I gave up on Glasgow for 'real' R/C modelling years ago, and just use Marionville Models at the Maybury roundabout, Edinburgh.

There is nice wee shop in Uddingston now, been there for a few years, at the Glasgow end of the Main street.

U-Control, once in Byres Road, was probably the best. Dunn's was good, but city centre made it a pain if you didn't happen to work there. Paisley once had a good shop, but I never used it.

Cheap imports again to blame for somethiing of ademise in the hobby, as you can buy R/C toys that keep the masses happy for less than the cost of a few servos for a proper R/C model.

Have a look at the Retailers section in these links.

Check the Turbotek (no zut) link for model jets. If you haven't seen these fly, DO, the flight realism without the glow engine buzz has to be seen to be appreciated.

Model Dockyard, was a classic place, was a place
where you required an endless flow of cash. Didn't
have the same sort of money as a kid, that kids
today have.

Was passing by Jamiesons Models earlier and
they have a tank inside a wooden crate, dunno
if its R/C or not, think its 200 quid or thereabouts.
To hell with the 1/32 scale gear get some 1/6 scale

Still good for scaring the neighbours cats.

There was another in Springkerse Ind Est in Striling, but seems it moved, then closed.

I've just been told of a recent opening, CMF Hobbies, 537 Duke St, G31 1DL, 0141 554 6633, run by Clyde Harris, but haven't checked this one out.

Is there not a model shop in the middle of cathcart road, in Govanhill? Don't know the name, so sorry if it's been mentioned already.

There’s the one near Glasgow Cross Saltmarket, and the other one across the road from Locomotion in The Merchant City.
