Singer Factory Clydebank

Postby escotregen » Tue Apr 02, 2019 2:09 pm

Appreciate that it's not truly 'Glasgow' but an awful lot of Glasgow people did work at the Singers factory in Clydebank. Researchers working on a project called “After the Factory” want to interview people who worked in the sewing machine factory that closed in 1980.

Anyone who is interested in sharing their memories of the factory should email [email protected] or phone Andrew Graham (at West Dunbartonshire Council) on 01389 772149.

(Would also be nice if such folks could share their, or their family's, stories here.)

My grandma used to work at the Singers factory in Clydebank. I don't know anything else apart from that fact though, sadly.

This is true! A wee wifie in my congregation told me she used to come out of her front door in Alderman Road and look at the time on the SINGER clock.

I told her most folks bought watches or wall clocks!
"Listen, it's too big a world to be in competition with everyone. The only person who I have to be better than is myself. And in your case, that's enough."

my grandparents lived in that end of alderman rd 485 to be precise and it would be almost two miles to the singer clock as the crow flies so she must have had some eyesight.the clockhands were made into presentation ashtrays.i would have thought this to be an old wives tale had I not seen one myself as part of an exhibition in the clydebank library.

Two miles is a long way but she could have been visually aided with a telescope and liked her carrots, I like to think it could be true.

After six months and a choice of 10 designs this is the one they finally settled on. Singer Tartan can be found here: https://live.staticflickr.com/551/31200 ... 633476.jpg
