HG Magic Lantern Show

Postby Vinegar Tom » Tue Jul 26, 2016 8:10 pm

The Magic Lantern has now been pretty much discontinued; similarly the VHS video machine. A few of the old slides for the former can still be obtained on internet auction sites and other fleamarkets.

The lanterns are a health and safety risk, but scans of the slides are quite safe to post:

A bit further to the East of Glasgow with this slide. You can see 2 sites which were later developed, for reasons which we can discuss, as the sites for 2 modern shopping centres. The large size is available if you follow the flickr link below and then the flickr download large size link at the bottom right. The people etc are fascinating.

Fairly unchanged today exept for the park. The park was acquired by the Corporation in 1857 with design work being carried out by loads of folk under Mr Joseph Paxton ( I know he had a posher title at the time, but I am sure he wouldn't mind ).

Might change a bit more depending on what bits of the Victoria they are allowed to demolish and or decide to keep.

Aye RDR, I have heard ( how reliable?) that the whole site is going to be totally blitzed and re-developed. Except for the wee block in the photo which is listed and cannot be demolished : - )

Sorry about the motion blur in this one. I really should read some of Walter's stuff too.

Not sure if anybody has bought it yet, but you'd be right that they could clear the whole site with the exception of the old main entrance with the panther above it. I would imagine any developer would build flats on it and try and incorporate the old entrance portico into one of the blocks.

I would be surprised if that didn't happen (barring anything going on fire). In my line of work I come acrross occasional tidbids of information like that every morning when I open my emails, so will keep you informed in a way such as this that leaves out various details. ::):
