No Corner Closes in Sandstone Tenements

Postby Govanite » Thu Mar 26, 2015 9:09 pm

Curious block of brown pebble-dashed tenements at the corner Greenhaugh Street and Robert Street in Govan

Never saw many if any old sandstone tenements with corner closes, just pubs, shops or nothing. The last 4 storey sandstone tenements in Govan were built around 1912 just before WW1. This curious set of tenements must have been part of the inter-war slum rehousing scheme of 1930s, they are 4 high like the old tenements but have gardens and are built of concrete with brown pebble dashed facing rather than sandstone, in fact they look just like streched versions of the houses of Wine Alley, Dunsmuir Street, Copland Quadrant etc built around the same time. GCC must have been trying to keep a uniform look in the centre of Govan. The must have been knocked down in the 70s.

Looking at the aerial photographs link I see that there was a vast mount of land apparently unused between Fairfields and Stephens: some being used for a car park later on. I remember a garage at the end of Cressy Street - was it Weirs garage? Was this land ever used?
