before the name change :?:
I know the old stock exchange was there
any ideas??

It was called St.George's Place prior to it's renaming.

Hi Cumbo

I found this in a book "The Glasgow Guide by David Williams" hope this helps. Please note that it is Nelson Mandela Place and not Square as you suggest in your question.

In 1986 St Georges Place (at the junction of Buchanan Street and West George Street) was renamed Nelson Manadela Place in honour of Nelson Mandela Place against the South African government's racist aparthied policy. In 1981 he was made a freeman of the city many years before he was released from prison. Glasgow has often voiced it's civic anger towards repressive regimes and this particular name change was made all the more sweeter as the South African Consulate was at that time located in St Georges Place!
