A photo was posted elsewhere of a couple of 1970's Glasgow kids standing in a back court, both dressed in identical astronaut outfits. Classic 70's stuff - silver lamé suits with NASA badges and big, goldfish bowl plastic helmets etc and my mate had commented that he remembered those well. All his mates had spaceman outfits or cowboy or soldier get ups, but for some odd reason a family member had bought him a bus conductor outfit, complete with change bag and clippie machine etc.

When all his mates were running around shooting each other with machine guns or laser beams, he was busy giving anyone that killed him a ticket.

Wonder what the job (profession) "ticket writer" entailed apart from the obvious?
I take it it's Ticket Writer ( building on the right) only the sign looks like Ticket Whiter - even more obscure? :D

A ticket writer was somebody who drew by hand the signs or "tickets" in shop windows which displayed the prices of the goods on sale.

A relative in the 1940s had a similar job to a ticket writer. He started off as a shop "ticket writer" but in the late 1940s and 1950s did painted posters to advertise what cinemas were showing. These were hand drawn and then coloured in on a large table. It was more the "city & suburban" cinemas that displayed these large posters outside. There were smaller
ones at railway stations. I can recall The Tivoli and Rosevale Cinemas at Partick and Grafton in Parliamentary Road Cambridge New City Road, Grand at Cowcaddens Casino(?) at Townhead used his firm because I watched him colour them in and sometimes he got a free cinema pass. Monday night 6.30 at the Grafton was not very "packed!". I think the "pass" was worth 6d but it was only for use Monday to Wednesday before 6pm! I also recall there was some sort of science fiction serial on the go as a second/third feature as he painted rocket ships and decorated my bedroom with a space themed mural-stars, planets, rockets etc. I was "into" Journey into space" on the radio. Looking at old cinema photos you will see these big painted posters. All hand done! Not always printed! He worked from a place up quite a few stairs of a sort of court of Renfrew Street. Near Buchanan Street Railway station because they did quite a few similar posters for the LMS and then British Rail. They used special brush pens and a quick drying "poster paint" with a strange smell. The guys that worked their were quite talented artists in their own right.

the researcher wrote:according to my dads birth certificate his father(my grandfather) was a turner which is someone who turns metal or wood on a lathe which was most likely metal which is engineering related as my dad was good at car repair and did all his own on his cars ive also got this skill as i like repairing bicycles and am self taught having done bicycles since i was 14 and have also worked as a bicycle mechanic in a bicycle shop, ive also stripped down motorbike engines and rebuilt them
you never hear the word turner being used nowadays but most likely where the surname turner originates from

My grandfather's formal title was Stopper, although you would probably have heard them referred to as 'Fullers'. His job was to go round editing posts on websites to include all the full stops (hence the titles). This was eventually merged with the similar job of a Capitaliser, which started the slide to extinction. Almost all Capitalisers were females (The Big Letter Ladies they were known as) and Fullers were men traditionally. They started dying out when the jobs were put together and they couldn't meet in a social setting to pair off. Of course, back then the internet was all fields.

Is it something to do with "holding" and "daud" meaning either a chunk or to strike?

Moodies Court 31 Argyle St - a place I'd previously never heard of had quite a number of ticket writers, bookbinders etc in residence.

Anyone know anything about it?

Love the writing and wording on those Robert.
I have a hunch that Moodie's Court was previously called Argyle Market and it was around where M&S is now.
That first document states it's address as "nearly opposite the Black Bull" :)
Maybe it had an entrance on Argyle St and Glassford St?
That area was covered by this thread yoinks ago with great pictures by HH

Yes, but in this case it refers to riveters. One would haud the rivet, and the other would gae it a daud at the other side.
