New Mural - George Street, Graham Hills Building

Postby scottwramsay » Wed Jun 25, 2014 12:33 pm

Does anyone know the (hi)story of this mural going up on the east wall of the Graham Hills Building?

Someone suggested it might be inspired by Lanark, by Alasdair Gray, but couldn't remember there being a boat involved in that.

I think it is the land ship that used to be on the roof of the Royal Technical College

Nice - although you can still see the old repeating motifs through the paint - legend has it is that they are a stylised "MH" for 'Marland House', the building's original name.

Proves one thing though - if the Uni has shelled out to have this done, it perhaps suggests they've done a U-turn on the plan to vacate this building before 2020.

Nah - not convinced. They've spent a fortune on that building in recent years, between recladding the outside, doing up the entrances and putting new lifts in. Contrast that with the Colville Building, which they are definitely going to dispose of, and its being run into the ground.

The Architecture Building at the top of North Portland St is facing an uncertain future also - although there's a rumour afoot at the moment that Strathclyde are going to lend it to Glasgow School of Art whilst the Mackintosh building is being repaired.
