Peter Holmes Motor Dealers Dumbarton Road Partick

Postby iainter » Sat Jan 18, 2014 4:51 pm

Hi

I bought a Kia Pride from Peter Holmes late 1970s . At this time they also had a larger car that was imported from I think
South Africa ??. Does any have any idea of the manufacturer.I can find no reference despite searching extensively for over a year.

Regards

Iain

Are you sure of dates? Kia pride was a late 80's car.

I'm not aware of any South African official imports from the late eighties. I do know that GM built Opels in SA as Chevrolets. These were generally badged as Vauxhalls here.
They boil them for 20 of their Earth minutes

Kia was/is part owned by Hyundai. I know not South African but could be feasable that they were sold in the same dealerships? SSannyong were based in Korea as well and as they didnt have a dealer network of their own at the time it could have been that the dealer you were in was selling both brands?

Thanks for the replies. I had the date wrong and I have now found the car.

Sao Penza

Re-badged 1985 model Madza 323 - kits assembled by Samcor and imported to GB by Automotive Holdings a subsidiary of Mazda Cars Ltd.

It did not sell well ( 1000 between 1991 and 1993) and has appeared on Top Gears 10 forgotten cars

I remember seeing this car at Peter Holmes. The reason? I had a Mark 3 Escort new in 1980 and this car looked rather like my old Escort! So a 1980 type Escort in 1991. Mazda and Ford collaborated with these models.

The only good thing about all these brands at the time was that they showed ppl they didn't have to buy Eastern European to save money on a new car - you were effectively getting a last-generation Jap car for little more than a top spec Lada yet it would at least look reasonably modern and was built properly. Look at Kia and Hyundai now - they are firmly major players in the market.
