the history of your house

Postby sonnyj99 » Tue Nov 19, 2013 1:47 pm

is there any source of information that could tell you who lived in your house before you? what was there profession, family details etc? i think i checked scotlands people before, but thats more about family history than house history.

cheers

Electoral register would be another source. Old records not available on line and more modern ones will cost.

If you go to Registers of Scotland, they can usually give you the history of who lived in your house from when it was built. It is quite expensive at around £30, I think, so I would exhaust all other options first. Their office is somewhere around Cadogan Street now. They used to be in George Square.

I had to prove title to a property in Glasgow. It cost me £100 or so with a search agent who searched the records. I got a copy of the original title deeds and not much else. This then satisfied the required authority of my "ownership" of this small plot of land. They search was done at Cadogan Street. Could have done it myself but this would not have satisfied the local authority! So yes its the place to go but I would try the Mitchel first-cheaper!

I found the street and close number on the list but how do you work out which house is which under the number?

and while I'm asking :D I'm having difficulty reading some of the script on birth/marriage records on Scotland's People due to either the original strange handwriting or the process of uploading it to screen - any suggestions?

Does ScotlandsPeople not provide examples of 'old' Scottish writing?

If not (and I thought they did), there are other places to view it - try the National Library of Scotland site.

If you still can't make it out, post the section in question on here - someone might be able to read it.

e mail Scotlandspeople if it's the scan. They will rescan for you. Usually the same day.

No chance - all I'm getting is miners, ironmoulders and something "steam" which I can't read. The scholars didn't appear till the 1950's - late 1950's ;)

Seriously, I wish I could sit in the Mitchell with some expert and work through this and not highjack other people's threads.
