One of my late brother in laws was a great angler, and when we lived in Dumbarton, back in the 1970's, he used to fish in the channel at Havoc when the tide was out. I remember him catching flounder and mackerel. In the summer, that whole section of the estuary used to be jumping with mullet.

I guess that explains the seal I watched for about 20 minutes a few weeks back from the Squinty Bridge!

He had an interesting technique too - swam from the east side of the bridge up until he was almost under it, then turned round and disappeared under the water before resurfacing back upstream to do the same thing again.

Salmon poaching ... Pool is on the case ::): from the Dumfries & Galloway Advertiser:

David Pool - Article - 26th December 1866

David Pool, Inspector of Police, Annan, on being examined by Mr. Ewart, writer, Lockerbie, and clerk to the Annan District Board, deponed that he had charge of the Constables employed in watching the fisheries in the district of the river Annan. He received information a while ago that a number of salmon were being caught by means of poke-nets on the shore of the Solway, which he visited on a certain day in the month of October: he visited the shore in the neighbourhood of Loch on the morning of the 11th, and the Annan Sand Rig on the morning of the 12th, being a Friday. He new the Annan Sand Rig was within the district of the river Annan. (Article continues at length)

what's a poke net?

Your fish look like Mullet. Quite common in the river. I had a pal who lived near Hill st in town. He was asked by a neighbour who was Chinese if he fancied going fishing. They duly met up , my pal had his rods and fishing gear but the Chinese lad just had a large bag. Off they went down to Ardmore Point and to my pals total amazement. instead of rods the wee guy stripped off and pulls a big net from his bag and taking one end set off into the water to trap Mullet which he said was a favourite. My mate said it was the weirdest fishing trip he ever went on .
THE MASTER OF THE CARAVAN :
But who are ye in rags and rotten shoes,
You dirty-bearded, blocking up the way?

THE PILGRIMS :
We are the Pilgrims, master; we shall go
Always a little further:
