Bear in mind, the branding ISN'T designed to go on a t-shirt, its designed to try and attract business into the city, conferences, that sort of thing, and to do that you do need some marketing literature, something that encapsulates the city in a easy to convey way - imagine doing the sales pitch to the board who are choosing the venue for their conference full of multinational delegates. Id be interested in knowing if my assumption there is correct - that providing a identity for Glaswegians to hook into wasnt the point? Might not be. Should it be? Also, you do need to look at the related creative work and see it in context of actual use, its not a stand alone slogan, it will always have a qualifier "glasgow makes people xxxxx" (ripe for parody). I really don't think its that bad - not awesome, bit awkward but not actually dreadful.

Glasgow ya bas I love that, the peoples brand that captures the spirit of the place - I'd buy the tshirt :) Maybe we could develop our own city branding!

I disagree Sharon I think it's too short-sighted and it's not enough to concentrate on the character of the inhabitants in order to package the place for conferences and business.
That's certainly a nice picture but it's only relevant really to someone who already knows the place and feels comfortable about it.
It's more appealing to those already here rather than attracting business.
Glasgow with Style and Glasgow's Miles Better in my understanding meant the place first and then the people.

All joking aside it would be a good idea to come up some slogan and package that's not too cheesy or parochial :D

Maybe a good starting point would be people's (both insiders and outsiders) thoughts on what the spirit of Glasgow means to them?

As business eyecatcher looks misfire. But perfect for Housing Associations. In fairness, easy to know Glasgow you don`t want to promote. Trickier to figure out all-important “one-shot” image from what`s left that nails down everything you do want to get across.

You`d think, though, upmarket ad agencies would at least know how to appeal to their own kind.

People make Glasgow:
Noisy
Untidy
Violent
Volatile

That's just what I've heard spoken this weekend by those who don't like the slogan. On the other hand, I've also heard the same phrase coupled with Pure Dead Brilliant, Smiles Better and the rest...

Ach well, ye'll never please everybody.

People Make Glasgow Orange next Saturday. Or as I over heard two visitors from the US last year ask an orange person" Is it Mardi Gras in Glasgow?" His reply was unprintable but on the lines of "Nae missus whits a mad grass aboot"

Remember going through Yoker station many moons back and there was a big Glasgow's Smiles Better Poster with that Yellow man on it

In spray paint below

"Without Catholics"

The same could be added for any religion or group I guess, and Delmont's post made the point more eloquently than I could.

My question is why; are the people who run business's (whatever they are) so vacuous that a slogan influences their thought processes significantly?

I'd rather get my bin emptied on a regular basis.

Well, it's not just the slogan though. The slogan is only part of the "brand" which is used to promote Glasgow. The thinking behind it (so I was led to believe) was that after the whole "Glasgow Style Mile" black and gold branding which was being used, the research turned up the fact that the biggest selling point of the city was actually the people who live here. Which is kinda nice.

Tell you what though, those People Make Glasgow lanyards have become a form of currency in the Education department - everyone in the city centre got access to them, but others didn't. I had to stalk a boss man for three weeks to get mine!
