Angel On Paisley Road Toll

Does anyone know if this statue has been there before the 1960's this photo was taken then? Also, what does this statue signify? I heard once that they were 2 angels and its unknown where the 2nd one went? Was there ever 2?

Is it possible there were two angels but one was blown off the building during the storm in the late sixties which devastated most of glasgow dont recall there ever being two angels though maybe someone on here who lived in the area can verify if there were two or indeed only the one

the statue of mercury which was atop the clydebank town hall was blown down in that storm and is now on the ground floor.

I doubt if there was ever a 2nd angel on that cupola, if you look at Robert Pools post both images seem to be from the 19th and 20th century, both show a cock weather Spire. For many years i also thought there must have been an 2nd angel that fell during a storm.

Here is my 2pence worth. There is more than just a statue needed to make the building symetrical so it dosnt look like there was ever a base for a second angel.

Plus, if you were superstitious and believed in angels, deamons etc you would know that the devil lives on your left shoulder, thats why you throw spilt salt over your left shoulder so it could be possible that the architect wanted to avoid bad luck by leaving the left plinth (as you look from the building) empty?
