Bobby

99.9% certain then that he was a buyer in the printing dept of SCWS;

http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/j ... -nal.shtml

all you ever wanted to know about the printing dept of SCWS including this;

"..Every paper and board
producing country in the world is tapped for supplies of
material, and the manager has frequently explored Northern
Europe in search of the best sources of supply..."

and this would probably have been the paper mill he went to;

What was that last line on the postcard and why is he not registered at that address?

There is absolutely nothing I can see on the postcard that gives us any clue to his first name or initial, which was why I was going to check the voters roll on Tuesday. Thanks to Bobby's welcome intervention, I don't need to now.

We all assumed that the Uni professor was correct to start with, and we have left ourselves convinced that Mr Rennie's initial was W. It could just as easily have been G - and Bobby has proved the name and occupation of the Mr George Rennie residing at that address.

As far as I am concerned, the puzzle is solved.

Is there any heavy chimney evidence to support this?

First of all; thanks for the unexpected, great response! We couldn't hope for better answers!

Regarding the dating of the post card we can not be 100% sure, but we were told by the woman who gave it to us that they claimed it was from 1932 in the antique store. As far as I can read the "stamp" says 1932, but of course I could be wrong?! I will send an e-mail to the Norwegian Postal Museum to see if they can help. By the photo we can tell that it's taken before 1932, as there is only built an "Oseberg-wing". There were built two more wings in 1932, and they would have been visible in the photo.

As someone in this thread said: there would probably be a good reason as of why to go to Norway back then (not to mention Skien...). Norway was one of Europe's poorest countries at the time, and the Viking Ship Museum was surely not the tourist magnet it is today (one of our archeologists is trying to figure out how many visitors we had back in 1932) and one would probably have been quite dedicated to go here. It may very well be Skien he has written, and as you guys (knowing more about Skien than me) stated, Skien was a major wood/timber/shipping town in eastern Norway back then. Could he have gone here for business?

Once again; we really appreciate you digging deep and helping us :)

YokerBrian said that a W. Rennie was registered at that address in 1933/34.

I'd love to decipher the last bit of the postcard.

and do you think it's possible he was on a business trip to Norway to check out the paper?

Quite interesting reading on that link I posted above apparently the printing dept was one of the busiest depts in Shieldhall responsible for everything from labels, wage slips to the brown pokey bags.

Re Norway and sailing from Glasgow.

I was reading something today, on the development of the River Clyde, and it made mention that in 1656 Oliver Cromwell's commissioner Thomas Tucker noted that "Glasgow was expanding in size & importance and the twelve Glasgow owned ships sailed to Ireland, France, Norway and Iceland and on occasion Barbados. The main goods being conveyed being coal, herring, paper timber and butter"

Tucker observed "Glasgow was checked and kept under by the shallowness of her river and that no vessel of any size could venture upstream of Dumbuck - beyond which goods were carried in small boats of three or four ton burden"

"Her sea going fleet comprised 12 vessels, the largest of which was 140 tonnes, but none of the 12 ships could reach the town in which they were owned".

Wasn't doubting you Robert, I had only checked the street index which shows W Rennie at 58 Marlborough Avenue, Broomhill.

Had I checked the name index I'd have spotted it.
