Hey all,
Just wondered what Earl Street is like as a place to live. I'm considering buying a flat nearer to the Yoker end and I'm trying to get as much information about the area as possible. So any insight/opinions are welcome. :)

Thanks,

FF x

Been a while since I've been down Earl Street, the first couple of Blocks at the Yoker end seem ok to me.

Best thing to do is to visit it at various times of the day to get a feel for the place.

A positive is, you're on the major bus routes to the West End & City Centre - the (204/205/216 - run directly to city centre via Clydeside Expressway in about 15 mins) the 62/42 take a bit longer as these services are routed through the west end., You are also a short <10minute walk away from Scotstounhill Station which provides fast regular rail services to City Centre with onward connections

Clydebank shopping centre with big Asda is 15 mins in opposite direction or there is a small precinct at the Kingsway with a co-op, pharmacy, greggs, newsagents, and a poor selection of shops at the Yoker end of Dumbarton Road

Cheers guys!

However, anymore info on what the place is actually like to live in and around rather than just basing your advice on the drinking establishments? :p haha

If you can't even be bothered to take the trouble to read Yoker Brian's reponse and take his advice then you've made up your mind already, or are asking a question other than the one you posted.

On what evidence do you base this claim? Here's a list of pubs from Westland Drive Whiteinch, to Mill Road, Yoker listing open and closed premises, and previous names if known

Granny Gibbs, - Whiteinch
McNabbs, Scotstoun
Corryvrecken, (Formally Dry Dock) Yoker
Smugglers, (Closed), Yoker
The Dog Watch (Closed) Yoker
The Elderslie (Closed) Yoker
Anchorage (Closed,) Yoker
Jarvies (Previously The Forum) Yoker
Wholbirns Wharf (Closed), Yoker
The Station Bar, Yoker
The Lovat, Yoker
The Boundary Bar, (Previously The Cawdor) Yoker albeit just over Clydebank side of the old County boundary

There's also the Big Joint and the Spanish place in South St.

The Whiteinch end of Earl St can be colourful and interesting at times. 8O
Don't know about the Yoker end.

Cheers Cuz

I remember the Big Joint when it was Sing Sing rehearsal studios, then it became a late night club (which was frequently raided by Strathclydes Finest) and was also at one stage some sort of fetish club

I remember when I was working in South Street, having to explain to a rather straight laced female colleague, one Monday lunchtime, what it may or may not have involved after a report in the paper the previous da) [/quote]

I think Earl Street, gets less colourful as you progress towards the Yoker end, not saying it's without its characters, it's like most areas, good and bad points.

It's my old turf - fairly popular now for renting not so sure about buying. I lived there a few years ago. The red sandstone flats are nice inside with fairly big rooms don't know about the blonde sandstone ones.
The area is a bit built up with the streets too close together. Too many medical centres on the main drag and not enough decent shops oh and Tesco has moved in since I was there. I would describe it as bit lacking in character although when I first lived around that area in 60's/70's there was plenty of character 8O
The talk when I was there recently was that it is improving and on the up but they would need to get rid of some of the takeaways imo and YES get it Westendy!! ::):
Depending on what part of Earl St your in you can get a bit of whiff of the sewage works across the Clyde - on a good day  but then so can the good people of the Harbour too - so your in salubrious company - you might not get the whiff up the Yoker end if you get my drift!

I'd been going to point out that Violate is still there and tonight is the night ............... however none of the usual places mention anything after the June 2012 club night.

I did indeed read what Yoker Brian had to say, and I found it very useful. However, I am interested in what it's like as a place to live, not get drunk in. I appreciate that socialising forms a big part of everyone's lives but in laymans terms I am asking about crime/general demeanour of the area/personal opinions on the area as a whole.

Please don't assume that I flippantly disregard others comments. I appreciate that people have taken the time to comment.
