City to get Asian-theme mall as House of Sher site sold

GLASGOW is to get its first Asian-themed shopping mall - and it will be launched in the building previously used by the House of Sher cash-and-carry.

Is 'Mall' an actual english word or one of these things we get imported in from America?

Originally French for a ball and ring game Pall Mall which then became the name of the alley in London where they played it. A covered walk way. That's how language develops. There's more Americans who speak English than the population of the United Kingdom. Their language not just ours. Glasgow has always appreciated American comedians, films, music and TV.

Mall is shorter than retail park or shopping centre.
"I before E, except after C" works in most cases but there are exceptions.

The French word for "mall" is "Gallerie" - which is presumably why the Buchanan Galleries is so named - if anyone can remember the signs on the site back in the early 1990s when it was still proposed but not started it was going to be called the "Buchanan Centre" (not very imaginative)...

As I remember the building it will be interesting to see what kind of Mall you could make out of it. A mall conjures up selection of clean and efficient smartly turned out modern shops, somehow I cant imagine that happening here !!
Ahm entitled to my opinion as well

It's a dead duck in my opinion - it's simply in the wrong place; a grotty industrial area. Not that an Asian market is a bad idea in itself, but locate it on the north of the river on the periphery of the town and they'd have half a chance of making a go of it. As it stands I see few people making the journey over there, apart from those who live in the adjacent residential areas.

Yes - I can almost smell the freshly lighted match, but before ppl get their hopes up that this eyesore may be for the chop - link back to a Herald article back in Feb:

http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/home ... m.20160030

Seems there are no shortage of potential takers anyway ("iconic" building my a**se, for all the wrong reasons it is iconic at best....); although I suspect more people would be after it for the plot of land it sits on more than anything else.
