Appleyards garage - Springkell Avenue

Postby deochndorus » Tue Aug 16, 2011 1:53 pm

Looking for a photo or info...
In 196? I visited Appleyards BMC garage in Springkell Avenue and wifey went there for a job interview but I've no recollection of where or what it looked like or what number it was. I visited there and it didn't help.
It's a pity how things completely disappear without record ...

and just as I write this I've had flashbacks to the garage in Cook St (Carlaw?) or Wyllies garage in Pollokshaws Road. Would be good to save images of these ...
(will be onto filling stations next ... anyone seen a filling station lately :D )

Carlaw's was in Cook Street, that would be right.
He advocated for the weak against the strong, the poor against the rich and labour against capital.

It would be worth checking the Mitchell library. They have among other things photos of Wylies in Pollokshaws Road from the 20's and a couple of excellent shots of the garage at Manse Brae in Cathcart from the same period. It would also be worth contacting the Scottish BMC club at:
The Membership Secretary
Scottish BMC Car Club

If you find out anything of Interest could you post it here. Myself and others who use this site have an Interest in Scottish motoring history. If you want I could check through my car magazine collections for advertisements(I collect motoring magazines from 1948-68), good luck, Johnny.

When I was seriously into Minis in the early 1970's Springkell Ave was a trip across every Saturday to drool over the British Leyland Special Tuning Dept.'s accessories.

To the best of my knowledge then and now it was the only BL branch that sold those type of parts in Glasgow.

BL-ST Group 5 racing spats were the 'must have' accessory for any Mini to have real street cred. 8)

Hi, Arnold Clark's former Garage in Vinnicombe Street is under threat of demolition(see posts on other parts of forum). Jaimie Gibbon is still operating under the bridge going out to Milngavie as Gibbon and Wilson specialising in classic Jaguars, best wishes, Johnny.

I'm not sure if there were a number of appleyard branches but way back in 75 i was offered a salesmans job in their branch which had the jaguar franchise. At the time i was working as a car salesman for hampden cars in cathcart. i didnt take the job as hampden cars offered me a slightly better job but nevertheless i was very chuffed to have been offered a job at appleyards as they were highly regarded in the motor trade......how the years pass by

I might be wrong but was the Taggerts branch on Merrylea Road, not several reincarnations ago an Appleyards selling Jags?

It could well be RDR its such a long time ago i cant recall what Appleyards address was but as it was a main franchised dealership a Taggart takeover does make sense. Thanks for the response

Taggarts did end up as a Jaguar dealer on Maryhill Road and in Motherwell.
Before them it was Macdonalds Motors who had the BL and later Rover franchise I think. They had other branches on Aitkenhead Road and in Motherwell but for Peugeots not Jaguars.
Were Appleyards not bought over by an Ayr company who did leasing as well. Started with a D I think.
