Clothing Factory by Teviot St?

Postby smokieboy » Wed May 18, 2011 12:37 am

Greetings all,

I was wonering if anyone knows if there was once a factory around Teviot St that made clothing? During the war it may have made military uniforms.
Or if there wasn't where was the nearest one to there.

Cheers,
Derek.

Hi Derek,

Just wondered if you managed to find out anything further on my Shepherd family from your relatives? :)

The only thing near there according to Industrial Archaeology of Glasgow is the Kelvinhaugh Cotton Mills on Sandyford St. No mention of uniforms in the book.

I've got a Google Earth file of all the 1000+ sites from that book on my website, if it's any use to anyone:

I see, thanks for that.

My gran lived on Gilbert St during world war 2 and the story goes she worked in a military uniform factory nearby during that time, so just trying to find out where it would have been.

Dalriada6, pm sent.

Derek.

A clothing factory that might have been used for the production of uniforms during a war.

Coustonholm Road is south of the Clyde and Cohens was apparently founded in 1925.

I'm more interested in the second mentioned factory, the one in Kelvinhaugh at 35 Sandyford street, is that now where the fire station is?

Yorkhill Fire Station's address is 200 Kelvinhaugh Street. I believe Sandyford St is further down.

I lived at 25 Sandyford St. Kelvinhaugh. The factory was next door to us,my mother and most of Kelvinhaugh worked there.
It was a clothing factory owned by Cohen, and in the 1950s until it closed in the 1960s it made clothes for Marks and Spencer,
mostly school uniforms from what I can remember. All that area was demolished in the late 1960s.

My mother was born in Greenock, but lived in Glasgow from a very early age. Her brothers and sisters were all born in Sandyford Street. I think it was pretty much the last close nearest the river on the west side. 13 might be the number, but I wouldn't swear to it! The family left about 1961 to move to Knightswood. If you look at Google Street view, there's an old Corpy electricity box. I understand this was just about directly outside the close.

There used to be a clothing factory run by an Asian guy called Al in that area. They only made Police uniforms.
As you all know....... "Al's Asians make the best Police togs!"

Went to Fran Healy's house for dinner. All we got was ice cubes. It was a Travis tea of just ice.
