Strathbungo Railway Station

Postby Ronnie » Sat Oct 23, 2010 2:22 pm

Does anyone remember the old Iron Horse's head and neck that used to adorn the embankment of Strathbungo Railway Station that was closed during the 'Beeching' years? what was the story behind it if any?? What ever happened to it?? I spent many a happy day sitting on it pretending to be The Lone Ranger or Roy Rogers.

It means nothing to me. You're right though, an outbreak of shyness?

@Ronnie - My brother and I remember it well from 1959/60. I don’t remember that it was iron, I have a light colour in my head, but that might just be a wee girl’s fantasy. I remember looking for it in 1973 and then again another time, when I can’t remember, and it was no longer there.

Two stone heads (horses or not, I don't know) were removed from the embankment during a 1985 community clear up, after permission was sought from British Rail. They apparently were moved to local gardens on Moray Place, but their current whereabouts are unknown.

They were the property of the Stationmaster, who had brought them with him when he moved from a station in Ayrshire somewhere.

I have now located the heads in a local garden, and will update the above page shortly with photographs. They are stone, and human heads, sorry.
