Went along to the site earlier to day.

Was shocked to see that they had started on another section of the building.

I spoke with a Council Officer at the site to make sure the masonary was saved.

Image

It has been put to one side and the Officer in Charge is ensuring that this is retained. I have aske to be kept updated and will pass on any information I receive.

Thanks for talking with the guy, Alex.

I'm feeling as gutted as the building at the moment, so I better avoid this thread for a couple of days to keep my blood pressure down.

I passed directly under that on the bus about two hours before and I did'nt notice it and I looked directly at the transport logo and did'nt see any sagging of the masonery.

Drove past it a few hours ago, didn't have time to stop to get any other photos than this (sorry about the light, but as you can see I was in traffic!), thought it kinda shows the devastation and the gap that's been left :(

Here are some newer pictures of the Coplawhill buiding

Any ideas what they are going to use the scaffolding for?

I'd love to take a walk around the building once the contractors go away!

I'd guess it's to replace the section of roof, nothing more sinster I hope :?

Before this happened I was in the middle of arranging with the manager, to visit the non-public areas. Hopefully that can still be arranged.

Despite all this, it is still an interesting building, with many original features. I especially like the old horse ramps, converted into staircases.

If you look at my last picture of the GCT logo, it looks like Heather is growing out of the stonework.

Go figure that one out, I'm stumped?????

It's Buddleia mate, and it's not the only building in the area that's
got the stuff sprouting out of the walls and roofs. (The building at
the junction of West St. and Cook St. being a prime example).
You can also see plenty of ferns growing around the gutters and
drainpipes. I'd be certain that both those have helped in no small
way towards the demise of the building.
We're in the stickiest situation since Sticky the Stick Insect got stuck on a sticky bun.

Either that, or they are going to strip the roof slates which are of value before they demolish the remainder of the building. :(

But surely Alex will be able to advise us early next week if the building is to stay or go?

There is a building on fairly street fallen victim to the ferns... the facing is coming away from the brickwork and is lying all over the pavement... the rubble has been spread over the pavement for over a month now. Obviously the street cleaners in the area are hard at work!

Ah fuck, I hope it's not that :-(
I suppose that's why the front section had no slates for years, surely it wouldn't have cost much more to extend the new roof a few more bays to cover the damage.
Even during the Transport Museum days, lead thieves used to try and strip bits off the roof, the museum staff chased them over the roofs on several occasions.

The latest new I have is that the two bays had to be demolished following an inspection. The road will be closed for about a week to allow for the removal of rubble from the site. There are no plans to demolish any other parts of the building at this time but monitoring of the site will continue.

I have asked for details of what is now intended for the other part of the building. As Ken was asking about access I have asked if it would still be possible for a visit to the site could take place. I will let you know when I received a response to this request.

I requested the RCAHMS put several more Coplawhill images online, including a couple from the recently demolshed area (which was last used as a tramway sub-station), and the stables area.

They're online now. Log into RCAHMS, and search on Coplawhill.
