In the areas I grew up, if a polisman assaulted a kid and that kid reported same to Da, the likelyhood was that the polis would have a personal fight on his hands with the Da. There was a strong and at times crude collective working class ethic of 'dont let the b******s mess with you or your family.

The rule was applied to any authority figure (teachers etc.) excepting clergy only - but even that could be broken in extremis.

If a kid did get hit by his Da on such an occassion it would be most likely 'for getting caught'!

Anyway, part of the collective ethic was that you did not hit other peoples' kids. If anything, that applied to you even more if you were a figure of authority. An aspect of this was the perceived unfairness of reactionary punishment such as birching in the way that it was applied overwhelmingly to working class kids - this was one of the reasons that crudities such as birching became outlawed.

A bit more of the old respect for authenticity, rather than dreary nostalgic myths on HG would be welcome on these aspects of Glasgow's social history.
Load of shit manys aboot in the arse from a heelin polis in they days saved a lot of young kids ending up with a criminal record ,and I can assure you that thats no myth
