It's the one in the arcade, init, Cyclo? We cerainly went up stairs to a place called Sloanes.

When you say upstairs...you mean like a couple of flights? cos you go upstairs from the arcade into the bar, but there is an upper floor dining room as well. i know it's still there cos i peeped in the doors the last time I was there but it looked kinda disused...hence the query re the dining room.

Aye, maybe it was just the bar we were in... Oh well.

its there all right I did a speech at a fundraiser when i worked for a organisation about six years ago, its very nice, it used be the old ballroom.

It is dead easy to join the western club.

My friend is a member and she isn't very classy or wealthy

It would give us a chance to get really well dressed up [Trackys and Reebok Disc trainers] and sample fine wines such as buckfast and eldorado!

Talking about that fine wine I had a summer job next to the bottling plant for EL D. It was called Deans in Pollokshaws - They delivered it into the plant in what looked like big petrol tankers hooked a large pipe into a coupling on the wall outside and pumped it in, classy eh !!!

I have never tried it (honest) but I have had a swig of buckfast once, disgusting stuff.

Maybe we should start a thread - disgusting drinks you have tried?

Well, i should probably order myself up trackies, a baseball cap and bright white trainers, but i don't mine buckfast at all. Quite decent tasting stuff, i reckon. Not my tipple of choice, but definitely drinkable.

I think there's a plaque or a name plate on the building that was Madelaine Smiths house, in fact it may well be called Madelaine Smith House!
I think it was on the opposite corner (Building Design Partnership?) and (again the late 70s and early 80s are a blur to me) I think it used to belong to the Art School and might have housed the Life Class on the top floor.

On this subject (kinda), anyone know whats happening to the (RAC?) club in Blythswood Square? It was the other big gentlemans-type club in Glasgow, but I'm sure it went bust a few months ago.

Don't know anyone who's ever been in that one either.

Driving ambition to mark history of new city hotel – Sarah Swain, The Evening Times (14 July)

Bosses behind Glasgow’s newest luxury hotel are appealing for help in commemorating its history. The 100-room, £26 million Blythswood Square will open in September in the B-Listed building which once housed the Royal Scottish Automobile Club. Work has been carried out over almost two years to restore it to its former glory, and managing director Hans Rissmann is keen to mark the building’s history in a “hall of fame” area. He said: “It would be great if we could get hold of any memorabilia so we are able to pay respect to the history of the building.” Mr Rissmann has already collected old car badges and pictures from the club’s heyday.
