Does anyone know the precise former site of this town house which was constructed in 1611? I understand that it sat where the current Partick Central Station stands derelict, but can anyone pinpoint it further? Would it have been on the upper part, next to the disused scrapyard buildings?
From what I can gather, it was built on elevated ground on the west bank of the River Kelvin, standing on land that was originally the site of an ancient manor house owned by the Bishops of Glasgow.
In the late 1700s it was owned by tradesmen who rented out the upper floor as a dance hall, and by the mid 1800s it had fallen into disrepair and most of the stones had been taken to build other properties nearby. What little remained was demolished in 1836 and a foundry and laundry were established on the site.
One source notes: "Today only the tall chimney of the laundry remains surrounded by a scrapyard locality is now occupied by a dyework." Does this chimney stand today?
