Removable storage

I've just backed up everything on my desktop to an external hard drive. Three files and in all they're occupying 170GB out of 320GB. One file is 107GB. This is getting too much. I can't very well backup to the DVD-ROM drive as it will take at least 20 DVD-RWs for just that one file.

I know there are tape drives available, but I don't know where to go from here. Anyone been through this situation before? How do you deal with large backups? How much has it cost?

Easiest option would be to buy another external hard drive and backup the backup onto that. :)

I have two external 1TB drives which I back up to using sync software.

I am just about to invest in a Windows home server with 10TB of storage to rationalise everything.

For photos I also regularly burn DVDs as a failsafe.

I also use both Dropbox and Windows Live Mesh to sync working documents to multiple systems across the internet.

All of my important data is stored in 3 different locations.

Before investing in more storage you need to work on a data management strategy and invest time in deleting data you don't need.

I've just bought a Hitachi 500GB drive intended for internal installation in a desktop. I've got one of those devices that allows you to connect one of these externally via a USB port, so that's solved my problem for the time being.

I thought it reasonably priced: £54 in PC World.

Not terrible for PC World I'll admit, but you'd have got 500GB more for another £15 online, including the external casing etc.
