Camcorders for 2009

I'll confess to knowing slightly less than bugger-all about camcorders, never mind what's hot and what's not for the coming year.
My dear parentosauri have indicated to me that a camcorder would be an ideal birthday present. (The date's not far away).
I'm looking for something to mount on my tripod for blow-downs and ship launches and I'll hand-hold the Canon-DSLR instead. Price range unknown, but I'll guess a figure of £200-300 to play with, though there's plenty of scope for negotiation. Mum won't pay for crap. "Buy cheap, buy twice" is her motto.
If it can handle fast moving subjects such as fighter aircraft and classic sports cars, so much the better.
Suggestions dangling from the bottom of an opening-camcorder-thread-gambit please.
