Slide piccies to digital format

Postby motman » Mon Dec 05, 2005 3:44 pm

Any suggestion out there how I can easily copy around 150 mounted slides into digital format. I have no specialist equipment, just my wee Fiju FinePix digital camera.

HP do a reasonably priced scanner that can handle slides and negatives.

(proud owner of one, reasonable rates for hire!!)

(1) You can get an extension tube for some cameras that have a slide holder at the end, so you photograph the slide. It's called a slide copier.

(2) Dedicated slide scanner, eg Coolscan from Nikon.

(2a) As a pro-photo lab to do (2) for you.

No mention of how you view your slides, so this may be no use, however...

I was in the same position with some old slides, and needed a no-cost option, so rigged up my projector to cast the image onto a neutral colour wall. My little Toshiba digital did a pretty good job of exposing the image, though I could tweak it manually too. Manual focus is probably needed, as the projected image may not have enough contrast for the autofocus to work properly.

I did have the 'luxury' of a brightness control and zoom lens on the projector, whch probably helped, and found that a proper projector screen was useless, as it the reflective surface resulted in a hot central zone, though if it had been a less sophisticated item with a plain surface, it would probably have been fine.

Never seen a slide copier for anything other than SLR, so guessing unlikely for a FinePix.

Wee bit of advice required, i've got tons of photographs lying about the house that I intend to scan in.
I`ve already got a scanner (CanoScan 3200F), but what is the best file type to save the pictures as ( bmp, jpeg or tif). I`ve got tons of memory so if possible I would like to keep the quality as high as poss.
Cheers

bmp is an uncompressed format
jpeg is a lossy format but you can adjust the quality
tiff is lossless but results in larger file sizes.

ideally you would scan in your scanner's highest optical resolution and save the image in the highest quality format available (tiff).

Thanks all, after being quoted £70 to copy 100 mounted to digiformat by Jessops, have visited that nice Mr Dabs and bought a Canonscan 4200F. Will post some results when I have mastered it, starting with some subway shots c1970.
