If your going for a Canon have a look here: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Outlet
many bargains to be had on refurbed DSLRs.

Yeah, I had spotted those already, just wasn't sure since they don't use the regular PayPal checkout, and I'm never too sure about ebay in general.
Have you bought through that seller before?

I haven't but they are the official reseller for Canon refurbed stock so should be ok. Canon would stop supplying them pretty quickly if there was a problem since they use their name so prominently.

Quite right! It's not a proper camera unless it's made of wood and powered by steam.

SLR users might want to have a wee look at the new lens unveiled by Sigma

I've finally decided to upgrade my wee cheap 2meg digital camera for something better.
I want a SLR and it has to be digital.
The one I'm looking at is the Canon EOS 400D.
Does anyone have any experience with this camera, or can you recommend something in a similar price range.
The 400D seems to be around the £500 mark, but I could probably add another £200 on there for the right camera.
I'm still very much an amateur, so I don't need anything too fancy.
Your thoughts please?

I would recommend you take a look at the Sony Alpha, the 18-70mm kit lens is one of the best in its class. It has built in image stabilisation - no need for ultra expensive VR/IS lenses. There are also a large number of used Minolta lenses and other accessories on the market which can be used with the Alpha (look out for the 50mm f1.7 and the 70-210 f4 - "beercan"). There are also 2 new higher end Alpha bodies on the way so there will be an upgrade path in the future.

I'd also consider the Pentax/Samsung DSLRs for the pretty much the same reasons.

I'll have a look at those. Many thanks.
