Tell The Council What You Think about Shawlands!!

Postby DAV236581 » Thu Jun 04, 2009 10:40 pm

After calls by residents, businesses and Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council to revitalise Shawlands Town Centre. Glasgow City Council last year started work on an Action Plan.

Concerns had been raised about the condition of the Arcade, vacant shop units along the length of Kilmarnock and Pollokshaws Road, parking and anti-social behaviour. More recently global economic crisis has led to the closure of Woolworths.

To progress the Action Plan, the Council have therefore set up a Town Centre Steering Group to consider the area from Newlands Morrisons through to Langside Hall, consisting of Councillors, reps from key departments, Glasgow South East Regeneration Agency, businesses, health and Community Planning.

One of the first tasks the Group identified, was to find out who the customers for Shawlands actually are, where they come from, why they choose Shawlands instead of other centres and more importantly what improvements could be carried out to make sure people continue to shop there.

The Steering Group also identified a need to find out how the retail businesses themselves are performing and what improvements might help.

During the Southside Festival, the Council therefore launched a Customer Survey to find out what Southsiders think and distributed hundreds of questionnaires at the event and in and around the Shawlands Centre.

The Council wants to make sure they get as many views as possible and will be consulting around the Centre till 31 August 2009.

Tell them what you think and complete either ‘Quick Suvey (if you only have a few minutes) or Detailed Survey (if you can spare 20!!)

The Questionnaires and collection boxes are available in public buildings throughout Shawlands, by e mailing [email protected] or through the Council website on:-

When the public let you know what they want when will the work start on redevelopment?

Who makes the decision once the surveys are in?

What is the budget?

Shawlands mall future reviewed

Knocking down Shawlands Arcade and building a new centre is one option that is being considered

PEOPLE living and working in the Shawlands area of Glasgow are being asked to give their views on their shopping centre.
Last year, Glasgow City Council launched an action plan after calls by residents, businesses and Shawlands and Strathbungo community council.
They were concerned about the condition of the shopping arcade, the number of vacant shop units, parking problems and anti-social behaviour.
Recently the global economic downturn resulted in the closure of Woolworths in Shawlands Arcade which many regard as a major blow for the area.
The steering group decided its first job should be to find out who the customers in Shawlands are, where they come from, why they choose Shawlands instead of other centres and what improvements could be carried out to ensure they continue to shop there.

Thanks David, I've just moved right into the centre of Shawlands and it's good to actually be asked what I think of it.

6. FEEDBACK: SHAWLANDS TOWN CENTRE
Southside Area Planner David Dunlop gave a presentation outlining the Town Centre
Action Plan for Shawlands. This was being developed to investigate how the area might
be improved and taken forward. David Dunlop described a series of images outlining the
area’s strengths and challenges. It was suggested that there was the opportunity to

further address the following issues:
- Shop front improvements
- Tenement window replacement
- Lighting to existing key buildings
- Rationalisation of existing Street furniture
- Traffic Management problems
- Improvements to the existing 1960’s arcade and associated street level

A local Steering Group was in place but GCC were looking for further Regeneration and
Development input.
David Dunlop highlighted that there was an on-line questionnaire on GCC’s website and
urged all Panel members for forward comments and pass onto any interested parties.

I have constantly raved at the worsening condition of Shawlands, look at Victoria road, now a total slum, shawlands will folow, too many sub lets, too many cheapo shops, too many to let signs, too many cheapo pubs (sir John's,james tassie) too many immigrants, too much chewing gum, (check pavements from blue lagoon), i could go on,and on, by the way, what the F**K is happening to eglington street, around the area of the star bar and eglington medical centre, are they filming some kind of black ghetto drama, (not noticed any cameras) or is this for F****ing real
Still lucan for me

Feed back from the survey i recieved today.

Thank you for completing the Council’s recent survey of Shawlands Customers.

With over 1200 responses received we have been extremely pleased with the feedback you have provided.

You have told us for example the things you liked about Shawlands are its:-

· Good pubs, restaurants, coffee shops, deli’s, clubs and its ‘warm relaxed feel’
· pleasant environment, community atmosphere, social life
· independent and specialist shops
· Good transport links to Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, M8 & M77
· Diverse population
· Beautiful parks, greenery and amenities

However you have also told us you did not like:-

· Vacant shops and the Arcade
· poor shop fronts and lack of lighting
· Safety and Security
· crossing the road
· Lack of public toilets
· difficulty in parking

The Council now intend to analyse the findings in greater detail and will hopefully be in a position to publish these later in the year.

In the meantime, I thought it might be helpful to provide you with a short update on how we are endeavouring to take things forward.

Following the set up of a Town Centre Steering Group last year, the Council have been gathering information about Shawlands which will feed into a Town Centre Plan. The information you provided through the survey is extremely useful in that it will provide a fuller picture of who is using Shawlands, why and how it can be improved. With the help of Glasgow South East Regeneration Agency we also hope to shortly begin a survey of businesses in the centre to find their perspective on what the issues are and how perhaps they can improve to attract more customers.

On 28 August, on behalf of the Steering Group, the Council also submitted a bid to the Scottish Government Town Centre Regeneration Fund. This fund was launched in May for one year only, and is intended to assist projects which help improve and protect town centres throughout Scotland during the economic downturn.

The bid towards a Shawlands Public Realm and Lighting Project is for £680000, and aimed at carrying out initial white lighting, footway and street furniture improvements. It is also intended to illuminate historic buildings, for example back lighting stained glass in three local churches, providing a lighting installation in Langside Hall, two illuminated fountains in Queens Park boating pond, tree management along the western edge of Queens Park to help connect Shawlands to Strathbungo better and the development of a Shawlands Café Quarter.

As part of the bid we also have a commitment of 100% match funding from private and public sector agencies which would take our overall spend to over £1.5 M.

The announcement of successful bids will be in late October. If we are fortunate in securing the funding, the project will be the first stage in delivering a detailed Town Centre Action Plan for the centre, providing early action on some of the feedback you have given by ‘brightening centre by improved lighting’ and helping to improve safety and security.

The proposed Shawlands Public Realm and Lighting Project will also aim to:-

· Build on the unique aspects of Shawlands by using light and key buildings to attract people back to the centre from its traditional catchment.

· Capitalise on a range of major attractions located on the Cathcart Circle e.g.; Hampden (1 m visitors each year), Pollok Park (700000+ a year), the Tramway (25000+), Queens Park (75000+ per year)

· Help ‘reposition the centre’ as the City approaches the 2014 Commonwealth Games, to become a leisure and social retail destination providing a diverse, attractive, specialised, good value quality food, drink and retail offering which is able compete against larger centres.

I very much appreciate your support in helping us to take Shawlands forward and thank you once again for completing our survey.

David Dunlop
