Great pictures HH - I meant to get down there with the camera when it was all happening but I never got round to it. Story of my life.

Did you get "formal" access to the site , or just get in by jiggery blaggery?

Any chance of a drinks night out in Morrison's before it's demolished?

Graphical House is staying Dex, Im pretty sure its either listed or a candidate for listing. Really a bit of a shame the Clyde St terrace had to go but its replacement is outstanding! Both of them!

I had never seen this building before, despite having walked down that street a million times over the years! Very Manchester in style, love it!

Crusty you’re of course right that it’s a real shame that Clyde Street terrace is going (I suspected needlessly)– and it’s gouged a big hole in my favourite walk of 'Glasgow’s-full-industrial/commercial-history-in-under-an-hour’ that I take people around.

But if the images are true to life, I agree that the replacements are worthy and in keeping with the quality of this location. So I’ll be watching the emerging real-time construction with interest.

I did’t know that Graphical House is to be retained – maybe cos the Labour Cooncilors are too feart of the Trade Union owners to do otherwise

More seriously, I assume the listing is down to the kind of commendable planners’ thinking that it’s-so-bad-and-ugly-an-example-of-60s (70s?)–stuff-its-actually-quite-interesting?

Quite the reverse the unions were feart the council widnae let get change of use to sell it. GpMu amalgamated with Amicus who have offices in West Regent Street and have now amalgamated with TGWU (offices in Bath Street) to form Unite. And the GMB is cuddling up with Unison. So that'll be another union office on the market. Mind you the combined Unison/GMB Glasgow membership would justify them taking over Fountain House.

Hmm, i'm not convinced with the replacement(s) at all. The scale and massing seems pretty good but, I dunno....the rest of it just seems a bit meh. I'd prefer something with a bit more solidity to it, rather than just another glass effort.

I hear what you're saying Gordon, the over0use of glass is a criticism often levied at the new. I think it's appropriate in this case though. The taller development on the left will be a hotel with the the shorter development being residential - and they'll need all that glazing for when Custom House Quay monstrosities start rising out the river in front of them!

Anyways, the new hotel and res block aren't that huge a leap in the imagination from what was going on in the area a century ago
