CLYDESIDERS TO DEBATE WATERFRONT PROJECT PLANS

Clydesiders are to debate the impact of the Clyde Waterfront Project on their communities at a conference in Clydebank today.

Some community leaders and residents view the project as the most recent in a series of failed regeneration attempts that have never supported them, some of Glasgow's poorest communities, or had their interests at heart.

Interested parties from Clydebank to Govan to Partick will raise their concerns and discuss the current proposals and their effect on their areas around issues of community consultation, job creation and affordable housing.

City Plan 2 Available to view :)

City Plan 2 PDF docs

The fall in Glasgow’s population over recent decades reflected a loss of employment opportunities and consequent out-migration. In the last few years, there has been a distinct improvement in employment in the City, and reduced long-distance net out-migration reflects this. In addition, a boom in the development of flatted accommodation has attracted more single people and childless couples into the City and new housing markets are being created in previously unpopular neighbourhoods. Nevertheless, the loss of families to the surrounding authorities continues, reflecting the choice of housing available across the wider housing market area. There is a need to sustain the regeneration effort by investing in areas that have the potential for significant positive change (e.g. the Metropolitan and Strategic Growth Corridors), and completing the renewal of areas which are in the process of being transformed into sustainable communities with new local facilities

I've only just noticed the westward path of the Expressway has been diverted up and along that new bit.

I'm guessing that's temporary.

Along the Broomielaw between the road and the river there's a nice grassy bank with crocuses just coming out. Today at one end there's a hoarding going up just at the edge of the pavement and at the other end some guys cutting down all the trees   and the walkway right on the river is blocked off.

This isn't the expletive-deleted Grand Plan Fastlink road happening already, surely, SURELY??? I was imagining there'd be a long planning process for that to go through when there could be an argument about a great sterile strip of tarmac-y stuff making the river even less accessible, and questions about exactly how long the bus-things would be running at 20 min intervals or whatever it is they're currently touting.

Whatever, the trees are gone, and all the people and bikes trying to get along there are going to have to squeeze onto one bit of footpath which is about two foot wide for the duration. Or for ever?

Last chance for 'Before' pics of the grass and crocuses folks....

And another thing...

Does it look to anyone else as though that great new bridge over the Kelvin is only going to be for the buses? And that there'll be four lanes of road and an elevated intersection thing separating the new build stuff there (including the transport museum) from the rest of the world?

And another other thing - the early plans showed a foot/bike bridge over the Kelvin near the Clyde, but I've seen nothing about that lately, is the bike route going to be that oh-so-pleasant pavement along the north side of the expressway for ever?

I'd think there was a grand conspiracy to stop people ever enjoying the riverside if I didn't think the powers involved were incapable of that kind of coherent action. So it must just be a enormous cock-up.

I'm off to smash things.

Can you point me at anywhere that's got artist's impressions of what it's supposed to be like when finished? My efforts have been like Alycidon's - found 10,000 way not to do it (well, lots anyway).

Yes.

This picture in the link below shows roughly what is proposed. Not sure if the road for the bus will be built at the same time. The fancy bridge was scapped as it was too expensive

Scoobydoo and Mori, thanks for the extra info - and I think I was right the first time.
It seems harder than usual to google up anything useful (would that be conspiracy, cock-up or me having an off day?) - eventually turned up Scooby's pic by searching for Fastlink on the Clyde Waterfront site ["offering a tram-like experience"], where it says planning approval was granted in July 2006, so it's a done deal anyway :( and due to be operational by the end of 2008 - I can only guess about construction timescales, but wouldn't it be surprising if they weren't starting now?

Mori, we should all get ready to be truly thankful ::): for the [assume Disney accent] gateway experience along quayside corridor [/disassume Disney accent]. Etc.

whats the problem with glass? thermally it can be made to work quite well, and its not all glass there - i would take that any day over a rendered wall....
