Can I advise the gent who wants to document an active market.....to forget the Barras....!
The Barras has been 'basterdized' to such an extent that it no longer can be truly called 'a market'.
Gone are the bargain clothing that established it as a place for the 'poor' to get cheap items.
Gone are the buskers and dealers whose goods, were always offered at bargain prices...
What we have now is the last remnants of stalls which will disappear at the start of the Commonwealth Games, as it CANNOT BE SEEN that people in Scotland rummage through second-hand clothing etc, simply to survive.
The up-market selling of flats to the 'worthy' will eventually destroy the area, and make it a 'customised area' for items that most people do not need, the likes of fancy lamps, suites and so-called antiques will readily be available.

If you really want the TRUE flavour of Glasgow and the people, you MUST go to the Blochairn Car Boot Sale on each Sunday, where apart from a wide range of 'bargains', you will find many dealers who originated from the Barras,
Therefore proving my point about just how irrelevent, the Barras has become.....

Aye. The Barras ain't what it used to be and I don't think the cooncil liked the image it had. BitTorrent ruined some of the dodgy games you could buy and porn is only a click away. You can buy ex army guff online, although the tool shop is good for odd things.
eh?

There is an exhibition being held by http://www.udsu-strath.ac.uk on Tuesday 2nd November, Barras Center, Moncur Street from 3pm until 7pm.

It is a presentation on the initial pieces of work in the study of the area, which will eventually, I believe, inform design proposals for development. The Barras Trust is involved as well.

I am not involved in any way with this, but was sent the flier invite. There will be free biscuits too I believe!

I was dragged there today by the missus and was disgusted at what the place has become. It reeks of crime and drugs and nothing much worth buying (the pound shops are cheaper and clean).
The Gallowgate is openly sectarian with Irish republican music spewing out of dives masquerading as pubs. Time the polis shut those places down.

Commonwealth Games city? They're having a laugh.

The last post sums up how I feel about the Barras - I hate the 'music' and the menacing atmosphere the place now holds. Maybe it was once a great place - but I for one, will not be sad at its demise.

Alright bobby - I have the flyer as a jpeg but not sure quite how to put it up here.

http://i55.tinypic.com/21aemmt.jpg THIS BETTER WORK!

I will link to an image host for now and if that works all well and good. I don't think you need it to get in right enough, and the info above covers it. Are you anxious about getting a biscuit?

I've just been along to the Barras to take a look at the Supermercado opening in the Barras Centre. Run by the team that organised the big 'Made in the Shade' independent makers markets in the Lighthouse, it's all looking promising and there's a real buzz about it. it's still very early days and there's still quite a few empty units in there. But this along with Chez Camille in time could really give the place the shot of life it needs.

It has got quieter over the last few years. A lot of good stalls have gone and some of the traders just don't seem to want to part with their stock. They go and sit at their stall because they always have and grouch at anyone that shows an interest. And to be frank, some of the 'antiques' are way over priced and with ebay etc people know the prices of things. I have a thing for antique sewing machines. There are loads stashed about the place, many at one particular stall. His prices are way over the odds for what he has, and he doesn't appear to ever sell much from his large patch. Leave it to these old timers and the crooks and yes it will die a death and soon.

Meanwhile, there are a whole lot of young, innovative businesses in Glasgow with little money to spend on promotion or premises. The only way for the Barras to survive is to welcome that with open arms and look to the London markets as models. Get a new generation in to spend money. There's only so long a place can survive on dodgy games, sport socks and laser prints of footballers!

People who think the Barras was any better years ago are looking through rose tinted specs.
I worked there in the 60's with my dad.
It was and always has been a crime ridden and insanitary dump.
Bulldoze the whole lot.
He advocated for the weak against the strong, the poor against the rich and labour against capital.

As with much of the past the reality is never as good, or as bad, as we remember it.
I hear the people sing.
