You don't need to think it, it is a lot more blatant than that. Safeway a few years back just before it was taken over by Morrisons moved heaven and earth (literally) to get the parcel of land at the corner of Minard Road and Paisley Road West at the start of Cardonald.

A Primary School was knocked down, a new Primary School was built, perfectly good Sandstone Terrace and Post Office Buildings were wiped off the face of the earth, a new Doctor's Surgery was built and major earthwork's and retaining walls built to prop up the adjacent Cemetery.

All paid for by Safeway to get that Supermarket shoe horned into that particular corner. Result - horrible blockwork and tin Supermarket, cheap Primary School and Doctors Surgery, gridlock, multitude of Road Traffic Accidents and the local Shops suffering.

Under normal circumstances it would never have got planning, but the new Primary School and Doctors Surgery were the deal makers.

Yes, I remember them well, had not thought of it in that way. Well said.

Very interesting and a brilliant post, I too never thought about it that way.

I wonder if any deals have been brokered to ensure this project goes ahead.

Time for a jingle.....

The same kind of thing happened in Airdrie at Broomknoll/Gartlea. Safeway bought the Airdrie FC Ground and they were relocated some miles away and they paid for new road systems, sewage, etc. The result was a brand new Safeway right in the heart of the main shopping throughfare.

I've just noticed this thread and I have checked back - on some of it (promise) :)
However has Tesco been granted permission for a superstore/student accommodation? I ask because someone has just told me that Tesco have also bought the petrol station in Whiteinch too!
Maybe you are all Tesco lovers therefore I apologise however some of you may take a crumb of comfort in that Tesco opened where I live - a rural backwater - and they were kicked up the jacksey by another supermarket and now they may have to close :o

They certainly have bought over the former Westburn Petrol Station in Whiteinch, closed it, demolished it and built a brand new purpose built Tesco Express - Esso Petrol Outlet. Open from 6am to Midnight - the previous garage was open 24 (when it suited them). The new place opened on Thursday 30th July and already it is being met with criticism by some of the locals for being too expensive (it is after an a Tesco Express). Lots of moans too, because there were no 'Opening Offers' not even a free 'bag for life.'

Still at 100.9 a Litre of fuel (down a penny on the Friday) it is on par with the rest of the places. Bets are now on as to which few local shops will be in situ this time next year.

The Scotstoun Emporium was due an HG visit but nobody had the navigation skills to make sure we could find our way back out.

....and don't forget the God shops!

As shops close Whiteinch Parish Church opens the damn thing up as a Prayer, Healing room or whatever. I am not against any organisation opening up a shop in the local main street just not a whole swathe of them!
